negative blood type and miscarriages?

edited February 2011 in Pregnant
I found out last night my blood type is o negative. I was reading something about having a certain blood type it could affect you and your unborn baby cuz the babies blood type might be different and antibodies build up and can cause miscarriage. Does anyone know more about something along these lines?? I had a 2nd miscarriage last night within a year and am wondering if something like this could be a reason. I know miscarriages can just happen but I'm curious

I have o- blood and because we don't know the dads blood type (because for some reason he refuses to tell me) i am at higher risk for rh factor and that's where your bodys immune system sees the baby and pregnancy as an 'infection' and builds antibodies to rid your body of the 'infection' aka miscarriage. It can definitley be the reason for a mc and I'm so sorry for your loss I'm praying for u. For future reference when u are ready to concieve talk to ur dr first i know there is a shot u can get to protect ur baby idk if they can give it too early because i have to get it at my next appt and i will be about 28 weeks.
Good luck babe n remember god never puts u thru what u cant handle :D
  • Thank you very much! Gives me a little hope. I knew I heard of something about blood types and RH factor and how it can cause miscarriage. But have yet to talk to a Dr about it. Definitely will be on my mind next time I try and conceive. Thankss!
  • First off I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm rh- and baby's dad is RH+ as long as your blood doesn't mix with the baby's there shouldn't be any problems. I'm not a medical anything so I can't say weather or not your blood type might of caused a miscarriage but the way I understand it, once again I'm NOT a medical professional, there might of been another reason that caused or contributed. Definitely talk to your doctor about this, s/he should be able to help you more then we can.
  • Ya, you can get the shot as long as the oposite blood has not come in contact with yours yet as far as I understand. My best friend had this issue. She didn't start having problems untill into her 26+ weeks. They had to watch closely cuz it treats the baby as a threatening infection. She ended up being induced around 33 weeks. He was in the hospital for a few weeks. waiting for the lungs to mature, and a hole in his heart to close up. Was some rough times, but he is a healthy happy beautifull 18mo old now :) She had an optopic preg befor that one, so her blood had already mingled and faught off the other blood and if she had got the shot then she wouldn't have had a prob. But her lame dr never mentioned it to her. So def ask. I think if you do it befor you get preg your ok. Even if you don't sometimes there is no prob. Good luck.
  • I'm rh- and have a already taken my rhogam shot...it help stop anitbodies from forming during your pregnancy and decreases the chances of it affecting your next pregnancy. You should talk to your doctor about, after I talked to a few ppl on here and my midwife I realized its not as scary of a thing as I once thought, if anything were to start happening your doctor will let you know what to do and take the proper steps.
