Doctor who does not speak english (THIS IS NOT MEANT TO OFFEND ANYONE)

edited June 2011 in Giving birth
I am 33 weeks and I got a call from my doctors office today saying that I was being transferd to a new doctor, I called the office to talk to my new doctor and introduce myself, and when she got on the phone she could barely speak English. I feel that communication is very important to have with your doctor, am I wrong to request another doctor before my first visit with this one?

  • @ChelseaMarie You have every right to request a different doctor. You need to be able to communicate with the doc and not worry if they are understanding you and vise versa.

  • Thanks ladies! I was worried I was over reacting by switching doctors but I just can't see going into labour and calling my doctor and asking questions and not being able to make out the answers

If you can't understand him how are you going to follow his instructions??? I say you should switch you wouldn't be wrong at all!!! Why Did they switch you anyway did they say???
  • @mybabe the doctor who I have been seeing is going to be on vacation from July 15th to august 20th and I'm due august 2nd so at my last appointment she suggested I switch now to get to know the doctor who will be delivering me. I was also a little mad at the office because this new doctor is also a VERY NEW doctor and is only 27, so I'm guessing she does not have a lot of experience either.
  • I agree. I'm hispanic my self and theirs times that I don't understand what my doc is talking about ( he's hispanic him self) and I talk fluently spanish. But yes comunication is verry important... do the request...
  • @jtmoon98 she's actually getting married and going on her honey moon. Guess they have to have lives too lol
  • Wow its sad they didn't tell you when you first picked this doctor... you could've Choosen someone who would be there through your entire pregnancy well I wish you the best with finding someone new!!!
  • ive had a very bad experience with obs who dont speak english and its caused me to not even want a male doctor for an ob again ever. i had a miscarriage about 5 yrs ago, and hwne i went in for the exam to see if i needed a d&c the doctor was asian and i couldnt understand a single word he said but my sister in law could so she translated. i shouldve never let him examine me, he didnt say one word, just shoved in the internal u/s wand and did everythign without looking me in the eye or speaking at all. didnt even tell me when he was done just left the room. i almost felt like i had just been raped. i even asked are u done? what going on? and he ignored me! just bc he couldnt speak english clearly! i was so pissed that when they billed me for that and said i needed a d&c i said hell no and i threatened malpractice lawsuits and theyve left me alone. communication is SO important! its your body! and your babys life depends on that doctor being in tune with your needs! id raise hell if i were you, but you probably lready resoved it, this thread is a month old. lol my bad.
