my son :/

edited June 2011 in Second Trimester
Has what is called a Single Umbilical Artery. Basically, he has two vessels in his umbilical cord instead of 3. I just happened to fall into the 2% of mothers that this happens to! Which is just my luck. It has made me stress more than i ever did before. There is an 80% chance of him being normal at birth, but its the other 20% that has me going crazy!! He can be born premature or have a bunch of heart defects or be stillborn. I need positive reenforcement!!!! If anyone has info about this or experience help me out, please! :(

  • Thank you!! I hope so. I wouldn't be able to handle it if anything bad were to happen
  • My best friend also has a son with a two vessel cord...she is full term and getting induced today, the little man is 9 pounds and healthy as a horse!!!! If they saw the two vessel cord they would have seen heart defects...her doc was not that concerned, did not check her any more than usual and her boy is just fine....don't stress, I think he will be perfect!!!!
  • Its an 80% chance he will be healthy. I will pray for you and your baby for both of you to have excellent health. Just try not to stress. Good luck and health!
  • I would be nerve wracked like you! Best wishes!
  • I am also pregnant with a little girl that has SUA i am 24 weeks and my doctor suggested that i do the quad screening which came back normal. He sent me to a perintoligist (sp) where he did a 3d u/s and looked at her heart, brain, kidneys and he said it all looks normal and i should have a healthy and normal pregnancy. My doc says that a lot of the times they don't catch it until the baby is born and he has never had a SUA baby born that wasn't healthy. My doc said that i will be doing NST'S at 32 weeks and if i make it to 39 weeks he will be surprised because she will most likely be a preemie. But it is hard to hear at first but the best advice i can give you is don't google it because it will scare you even more. I am sure both of our babies will come out healthy! Good luck and try not to stress. I know thats easier said then done.

  • my daughter had the same thing she was born at 41 weeks 7pnds 3oz n healthy i prey u have the same out cum
  • Thank you all!! I'm sad yet also glad to hear that another mom is going thru this as well. I needed to hear that you are still positive!! I go for an eckocardiogram on him the 13th, I'm praying his heart is just fine!!
  • I am sure he will be fine. Like my husband said if there is something wrong she is our daughter and to us she is perfect! If you need anyone to talk to you can email me at bmcgrew@email.itt-tech.edu i see the perintoligist the 11th for a follow up. But she is an active one and that makes me happy!
