edited June 2011 in Military moms
Trying to find a way to save some extra money so I decided im going to cut his hair!! He's spending almost 50 a month to get it done weekly. I have never cut hair before. Also plan on shining his dress boots since its another 20 a month if I can....def need help with that. Any tips or advice? Oh and its not possible for him to cut his own hair lol. Did it once and he will never live it down :p

  • Dont have any tips but Im part of the army life and that is definitely a great idea on how to save money! My bf would never let me touch his head hahah but goodluck!! :D
  • I've offered to cut my bfs hair to save money but he refuses. He's marine and wears a high and tight. I cut my sons hair military style just bc I like it super short so I don't have to do it every week or so. My bf found a barber in town that does it for super cheap...maybe look into that if he refuses. If u do cut it just remember that it always grows back and in a week he could get it fixed...that's if u mess up. Maybe go to the barber with him and watch him do it and maybe ask a couple questions and the sizes of the attachments and such.
  • Why does he need his dress shoes so often?! Jw... I think my bf has worn his once in the last two years! Still no tips though lol sorry!
  • Well I cut my hubby's hair and my only advice is use guards! Lol

I also shine his boots....make sure they stay off your carpet bc the black shine WILL stain it. Good luck.
  • @stbmilitarybrat Haha. Oh my other half is plenty nervous about it, but if I mess it up we can just bic it!! Im going to practice when he has leave for the baby this way it wont be that awful ha

  • I'm not army wife but I'm usmc... we just went to Target and bought hair cutters razor thing and I just shave his hair. When it comes to shoes I just shine them.
  • I threatened my husband and said I was gonna cut his hair he likes to see how long he can go before one of his higher-ups says something... those sound like 2 good ways to save some.
  • Ahh my phone posted a lot. :( oh he doesn't mind me wanting to do his hair he finds it amusing. The guy he goes to does a great job but its 10 each time and if its 10 we don't need to spend id rather not. good idea about asking the barber!! I think I will watch him. And the first of every month they have to wear class As. And the boots must be shiny. He's been in trouble for it before. Where can I get the polish and how do I do it????

  • @navybabyonway lol mines tried that and he didn't get very far!!! Plus his hair is so curly so it flips up all over and just looks messy
  • Buy the black polish at target use an old or new white rag. I polish it in a well ventilated area and just do until they are shiny.
  • @katiep8610 THANKS :) this should be fun lol.
  • Fading is not an easy thing to do trust me. I went to cosmetology school and tried cutting my husbands hair a few times (he is retired USMC) and he was always so worried that I would screw it up that I just never did it anymore. Does he get it cut at the barber shop on base? There are ususally places out in town that do an awesome job and the cut lasts longer. The barber shop on base at Miramar in San Diego did a once a week hair cut, the really popular place out in town did a once every 10 days to 2 weeks cut.
  • @juliek77 yeah it doesn't seem easy, but even if I can maintain it so he can get a good cut once a month would be helpful. The one he goes to is off base. Same guy does it everytime and he does an awesome job, even if he takes forever and a day lol. His hair grows so fast and since its curly it looks messy really fast. So he cuts it atleast every other week. But usually every week. Im determined lol.
  • @mandiixmayhem, I feel your pain! It isn't cheap especially when they have to get their hair cut so often. If you do try cutting his hair, just relax and don't let him stress you out LOL. Save receipts for his haircuts as well because I am pretty sure you can use those as a tax deduction (don't quote me on that though!). Good luck!
  • @juliek77 between the haircut and having to get his class As cleaned monthly is costly. Ha believe me when I say he is really amused with me wanting to do his hair. He's the one who told me not to worry if I mess up we can take a razor to it and try again when it comes back :) yeah we tried that this year but it has to be a certain amount for it to be a deduction. Oh well. Better than owing money!!! Lol and thanks :)
  • @2ndbutfirst I have no idea why youtube didn't cross my mind! Geez. Lol oh no was it awful shining them. Ha. I can handle once a month. Hell just have to make up for it :p
  • I just shave his head completely...no way I'd go fancy.
  • I use to do hair. My advice is to get trimmers and just clean up the edges and around the ears.... Make sure u fold his ears down. It wont look like a fade but its not going to get long enough for his first shirt to say anything. If you need to use a larger guard to clean up the rest of the hair. Do not try and give him a fade. It will not turn out and hell probly need let you touch his hair again. If you take my advice he could hold out for hair cuts (by a pro) maybe you clean it up once a week and then let the pro do it every two to three weeks
  • My husband does his own, as well as others in his company. It's taken him a WHILE to figure out how to fade his own hair but he's been doing the other guys' so long it's easy to him. If you get good at it, you could offer your services to others in his company, too. Might save them money and make you money at the same time. :) good luck!
