can they measure baby without a scan?

edited July 2011 in Third Trimester
My friend is 31 weeks and got told her baby not grown since 27/28 weeks and is only about 2lb 13oz yet they never did a scan? they got her going in for further investigation on28th but surly if they was worried they'd have her in straight away? they also told her that if he's not growing she'd have to have an early c section? and i know they do fundal height but that's not enough to get an estimated weight is it?

  • They do tummy checks where they measure from pelvic. Bone to the top of the uterus. So maybe she's just meassuring small? It wouldn't surprise me I was measuring at 29wks and I was 31wks..sometimes its normal just means baby can gang out a little longer :)
  • @soontohavethree yeah we call that fundal height, i just didn't they'd be able to give you an estimate of weight with just measuring that :/ i dunno all confused lol
  • Yea I don't think they can tell weight. Has she always measured small? I would think as long as baby has a nice strong heartbeat they're not to worried.. and the 28th isn't that far off.. hope your friend and baby is ok
  • @soontohavethree me to she's only 17 and i think her mum is worrying her to much cos if they was really really worried they'd have had her in for a scan a lot sooner then waiting for 2 weeks She's always kinda comparing her to me cos my bump has always Been huge were has she hasn't been but at all check ups and scans baby and fundal height been around same has me until this one
  • Yeah Like I said my last apt I was measuring almost 2wks behinds and they weren't worried. Just told me she might be staying in a little longer... which I don't like my first scan was done at 6wks so I'm sure my DD isn't off two wks lol..
  • @soontohavethree lol doubt it is if you had one that early, got plenty of time to catch up its only on average that they base things on :)
  • Actually with my last pregnancy they did give an estimate on weight by just feeling the baby from the outside no scan... They told me at 36 weeks my baby was well over 8 lbs, he was born at 40 weeks and weighed 9pm lbs 8th ounces.. So they can get close!
  • weight is always an estimate even if they do a scan they cant weigh completley that way
  • I think they just go by averages and there is some way fundal height can estimate weight but I don't remember what it is....teen moms tend to have issues with small/low birth weight babies but you should be right, if they were extremely concerned they would have had her in asap...on the other hand, if she's really worried she should call the doc and push to get in sooner, after all she's the one who will be worried for the next two weeks, not them :p
  • @kello29 learn something new every day lol Ty for replying :)
@lae3 yeah i know its an estimate i had scan at 28 weeks and they said around 2lb 15oz

@1sttimearmywife she said that's only appointment that's available i think it's her mum that's worried more then her lol i keep saying if they were worried they'd have her in sooner they said my mum was small when she was 31 weeks with my brother so she had a scan within 3 hours and he was measuring like a lb above average lol
