Those who have gestational diabetes

edited July 2011 in Pregnant
I was just diagnosed with GD yesterday at first I was extremely upset but I'm getting over it. I don't have a nutritionist appt till Monday and ill learn how to test my blood sugar then too. Until then I was just wondering what you ladies are eating??? Any good recipes you can share would be great.

  • I dnt have any recipes but its all just basically counting carbs & no sweets :/ it can get very bland & annoying!!
  • I'm type 2. Just make homemade meals. Cut down pre made/pre packaged food. More veg fruit & protein helps! The pricks on the finger aren't too bad though I can't prick myself & make hub or kid press the button. Lol.
  • I had cut chocolate caffeine out my diet coml
  • Bland you can work on. Try seasonings & herbs. Mrs Dash or spices & such. It helps a lot! I don't mind using lotsa stuff.... garlic or onion powder, cumin, Italian herb mix. Sweets wise cinnamon, vanilla extract, clove, ginger, allspice, addind fresh citrus to water & fruit is yummy! Just get creative! @1stTime_Mommy @Chelsea_firstbaby also ask for your A1c levels. Mine is 5.6 its a test to check sugars in the blood over a 3 month period.
  • Completey once n a while I will have a slice of chocolate cake my nutrtionist told me because I have gd my body will crave what I can't have good thumb of rule she said I crave chocolate so unsteady of eating a while boxs of hotesst chocolate donuts eat a hershey size bar not the big bar but how it is broke down into little pecies one of those a day she said it won't hurt...... But this was just recently they put me on gluybride because even though I was doing perfect on the crabs n no sweet diet I still had glucose levels threw the roof 233-171 which was my range for the morning before eating.....
  • aand fruit is a good source of sweetner but you can only have a little as that is still sugar o milk is not good for first thing in morning
  • so its not good to drink milk? i have gd too and i dont know what to eat for breakfast my sugars arent regulating and its stressing me out i taught the meds would help and not really this sucks :(
  • I have gd i was in the hospital for 3 days because mine was really high... They just gave me some pills to take every day before i go to sleep...you could eat anything thats grilled.. Its like if you were in a regular diet... No soda just wAter & just check how much calories it has...i usually eat grilled chicken with a lil bit of rice & some corn on the sidee...

@waitingformybaby you could drink milk but the 1% one
For breakfast you could eat some oatmeal or some pancakes with syrup but look for the one that say no sugar added it actually tastes the same...
  • Any kind of milk will make your sugar go high if its not measured because of the carbs in it. Its best to cut back on carbs and watch your serving size(your nutritionist will teach you how to count carbs) but for now watch portion sizes of fruit pasta bread grains etc and eat more meat and veggies and also juices and pop will help since those are mostly sugar.
