how does the cm thing work with dilation?

Had my Dr apt today, they checked me, I was soft at 36 weeks, now I'm 50% effaced and a finger tip dilated...a Freaking fingertip...I've been having sex and walking every weekend and staying active and was so bummed when she said finger tip...I'm trying to get my lil man out with out pitocin but how do the measurements? Is a fingertip like a pinky? And the Dr attempted a membrane sweep for like 2 min but I have posterior cervics so not sure if it will help...but does anyone understand the measurements of dilation?
