Help with my 2 week old.

edited July 2011 in Babies
My baby boy is 2 weeks 4 days old. He didn't sleep well at all last night and all day today he has been extremely fussy. I am breastfeeding and I haven't eaten or drank anything out of the ordinary. I have given him gripe water, gas drops, and I've changed his diapers, and nursed him. He isn't sleeping hardly at all today and when I do get him to sleep and lay him down and very quickly wakes up crying. And sometimes he cries like he is in pain. One of those kind of cries. I need advise mommy's. I'm not sure what to do for him. I am so tied from my lack of sleep and I fel bad cause I don't know what could bothering him. This all just started in the early morning. Around 2:00 am. Any ideas or anyone going or has gone through what I am? Thank you in advance!

  • this may sound weird but i had the same problem with my son when he was born he had reflux and had to be put on meds at first i was like there is no way my son has reflux he doesnt vomit but apparently there is 2 kinds vomiting or gas he had the gassy one. they put him on the meds and it was like he was a whole new baby best thing that has ever happened to him lol maybe talk to your doctor! good luck momma
  • Jaden had a day like that. It's hard to cope not knowing why they are screaming. I ran down this list and realised he just wanted to suck so I gave in and used a pacifier. It worked...here's that list.. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/healthy-baby/PR00037
  • Both my kids were their fussiest at 2-4 weeks (or between 42-44 weeks gestation, my son was a premie). Neither of them would sleep unless being held, and they looked distressed when they were awake. I thought something was seriously wrong. Fortunately they both outgrew this by 6-8 weeks. I would't suggest medicating unless he isn't eating well, because a side effect of reflux meds is fussiness... Google the "Happiest Baby on the Block". Its basically using the 5 S's (sucking, swaddling, swaying, shhhing, and side lying) alone or in combination to replicate the in utero environment.

My kids really liked christmas lights. Also, a wrap carrier works wonders if he just wants closeness of being held (i like the Sleepy Wrap, but Moby Wraps work too). However, nothing ever completely cured the fussies. You just basically have to try a bunch of different stuff, and then they outgrow it! It gets easier, I promise!!!
  • Well idk but just think about this... two weeks ago he was warm safe n in a compact space. Its hard being born! U go from cozy to a crazy world! Try a swaddling blanket and holding him close and a passy... some babies just have problems adjusting to this crazy world!
  • @mathmommy
Thanks for the tips. It makes sense our boys are fussy right now because the world they lived in has been taken away. Maybe too much stimuli for them. I will try all those s techniques.
  • I had the same problem. I cut dairy completly out of my diet and it helped. Also try swaddeling him. When my son has gas i swaddle him hold him close n tight w/ a paci like @mandac10 explained.
  • @Landynplus1momma thank you. I am keeping my eye on that, since my almost 2 year old had reflux and cried all the time. They put her on Zantac I think it was and it helped her alot. Just not sure if he has that and I hope not.
@Jaime77 Thank you! I give him a pacifier and he does suck away on it, but it isn't always enough for him. I feel like he is hurting in his tummy, but I'm not sure. Thank you for the website, I'll check that out.
@Math_Mommy Thank you! I have a sling and he does like it. It looks like he's back in the womb, lol. I hold, and do the shhhing, rocking, and stuff, it helps for a little bit, but then he starts fussing again. I am hoping its not reflux. I don't want to give him any medicines if I don't have to. It just seems like this just happened out of no where and he's been like this all day. he's barely slept today and I so need a nap too. I am exhausted. He does seem his most content when he is on the breast, but he can't stay on it all day. Oh I hope tonight and tomorrow is better. Thank you for your tips. :)
  • @mandac10 yes that is so true. The lactationist in the hospital gave me a form and it talked about on the 2nd day and some days after that, but how a baby is very fussy due to the adjustments from womb to world. ANd they just need extra soothing. I hope maybe that is all it is. Praying that it is just that. :)
@Beautiful_Altar thank you! I do the swaddling all the time even those his little arms don't stay inside but at least the rest of him is wrapped nice and tight. I haven't really had too much dairy, but it is definately something to keep my eye on. Even just once can cause a reaction. I hope not, because I love my ice cream, lol. Thank you for the tips. :)
