Tips on getting baby off nipple shield?

edited August 2011 in Breastfeeding
My little one isn't the least bit interested in my real nipple. She will latch and suck for a minute then gives up and cries. So frustrating. I'm tired of keeping up with the shield and washing it. Its getting annoying. Shes 3 months old now but is a preemie born 9 weeks early. Prob weighs betweem 6-7 lbs. Is she still too small our what?

  • I don't have an answer for you because my daughter refuses the shield. but bump for ya
  • I don't have a great answer either. Just be persistent and patient. She will catch on eventually

  • i know exactly what ur feeling. my daughter was born 4 weeks premature and needs he shield. i actually prefer it cus the few times she does latch on my actual nipple she rips it up, but if u can figure out a way definitely let me no. good luck >:D<
  • Have you tried feeding a few minutes with it on and then removing it and then try having her latch on? Some babies just need it for the time being and eventually wean themselves off.
  • I'll bump this for you and tag @HomeBirthAdvocate to see if she has any advice on this one. :) We'll all be lost without her if and when she decides to leave!

@newmama16 @HomeBirthAdvocate I try all the time and she just spits out my nipple and cries. The nurse in the nicu told me the shields were just a temp fix and I shouldn't use them forever
  • I had the same problem with my son, i kept doing what you are doing just offering my breast without the nipple shield and little by little it worked...especially when hes super hungry. Good luck! :)
  • My daughter wasnt completely a premie so i ddnt hav ne1 in the nicu but i did get a personal lactation nurse n she told me there is nothing wrong w using the nipple shield cus im stil producing milk n shes stil eating. I try weaning her off the shield but it dnt work she jus gets pissed off. I see no problem w continuing to use the shield n neither does my lacation nurse so im jus gunna keep usin it. Good luck to y'all tho... :)
