driving down the road with hubby and he is curious...

So my hubby is driving us down the road and he was curious and asked me to ask my pregly friends for advice! Lol what if on the road I go into labor and our daughter pops out! He doesn't have a knife... So his question is would he attempt to cut umbilical cord with his keys or just drive as fast as possible to hospital while I hold her and she is still attached to umbilical cord ??? Lol

  • i dont think your supposed to cut it yourself lol,but i have seen on tv shows it says to somehow clamp it off until you get to the hospital, like maybe with a shoe string or something.....but i dont know if thats 100% true
  • That would be one crazy fast labor! But I'm pretty sure you leave it alone and keep the baby up on your chest and rush to the hospital.
  • U can leave it attached til u get to the hospital.

  • Well chances are she won't just pop out...
  • Leave it attached and tie a shoe string around it. Keys are dirty and it would need to be cut with sterile scissors lol
  • Tie a shoe lace around it is tight as possible.
  • Well we r like 30 minutes from hospital and my sister popped like that Soo I guess I've seen really fast labor before and she did almost have a baby in the car!! Haha so thanks yall for the responses :) hopefully my marine husband will figure it out if that were the case..

Thanks :) did yall learn that in a child birthing class?
  • I am scared of going into labor and not making it to the hospital. I now live 45 mins away from the hospital and that is on a good day but I have heard to leave it attached.
  • @mamak thanks :)

    @snreda what is a hemostat??
  • A medical clamp.
  • I live an hour away from my hospital and I'm almost due with my third. My husband already has hemostats In the car. Hes delivered babies before on his own so I'm not worried
  • @snreda can he use a shoelace like everyone else is saying.?? And instead of biting it can he wait til we get to hospital??
  • Hemostats are like a clamp that they use to do piercings or that's wha they remind me of and no I didn learn that at a birthing class just tv lol

  • In the event you r too far from a hospital you must Tie off the umbilical cord in 2 places approximately 6-8 inches apart and cut the cord between the tie offs. I have medical experience so I could talk someone through this or do it myself however I wouldn't encourage Anyone to do this unless its an absolute emerge

  • Having delivered my own son believe me I dont wish this on any daddy lol. I was lucky enough to have a country nurse arrive about 2 minutes after delivery. My wife was then air lifted to hospital as it was a5 hour drive to nearest specialist hospital. Her labour was 11 minutes from water break with no prior contractions etc. I have fingers crossed that I dont have to do this again lol.
  • Ok so I just talked to my doctor and he said use a shoe string!! You have to do something you can't just leave it alone!!! You have to cut off circulation some how esp. If you are that far away!! They even have it on the tv shows using shoe laces! My fiance is a paramedic and he also said you need to tie it off some how regardless if its sterile it just ties off the circulation that's it. Sorry I just had to put in my input.
  • I thought you were just supposed to leave it attached...? What in the world is gonna happen that's so horrible if you leave it alone? Seriously, I'm curious to know.
  • they say to try to clamp it with something until you get to the hospital but if you have nothing to clamp it with than just leave it attached. a friend of mine went into labor and they didnt make it to the hospital in time and she just used a heavy duty bobby pin to clamp it! thank god for beauty school at the time!!!
  • What to expect when you're expecting says to leave it alone. Even in the hospital you shouldn't cut it until it stops pulsing anyways, because it's better for the baby.
  • Haha you're husband is very imaginative! :) If that really does happen, tie it off and thats all. Under no circumstances should it be torn!
