overdosed yesterday *long* with question

edited August 2011 in Pregnant
Yesterday was my first day mixing my insulin. I accidentally switched the doses and took 40 of my fast acting, when I should only have taken 4. I called the diabetes learning center, and the nurse said I should go be admitted and be put on an IV to counteract it. She also told me that my doctor could prescribe a shot to counteract it. She told me to call and inform my diabetes specialist and get his opinion. I told him what happened, and asked him what he recommended I do... he said "well, I recommend that you don't do that"! Seriously asshole, I already did, so what now. He told me to just keep an eye on it, drink some juice and check my sugar ever hour or so. Said he would call me back when he called in the shot, so I could have someone pick it up for me..... this didn't sound right. I called my nurse back and she said that was wrong. I should check it every 15 min and take in as many carbs as possible. I had it at 100, which was good, and took a 10 min shower, and it dropped to 41, which is right when I started to feel like I was losing it and going to pass out. In the end, I had 3-20oz mt dews, a protein bar, 4 capri suns, 3 corndogs, a candy bar, chips, a sandwich, about 3 cups of fruit, 6 packs of gummys snacks, 2 cups of Orange juice, and some other stuff, all from 8:30am-2pm and then it finally stopped. if I would have listened to the doctor, I would have most likely been in a diabetic coma.

So my question is, would I be wrong to stop seeing him? he never even called back to give me the shot that could have prevented all this.

  • That's ridiculous of your doctor. I don't think it is wrong at all for you to stop seeing him. Find someone that will take care of you and your baby, not just blow you off. I'm glad you are both okay, God bless you.
  • @lilmama19 thank u. It was so scary, the nurse kept telling me to have someone take me to the ER, but the only person here was my little brother, so she told me to show him how to dial 911 on ny cell phone incase I passed out. My doc didn't seem to care at all.
  • you wouldn't be wrong in the least bit....that was very messed up
  • @crumbledcookie it just sucks because ge is supposedly the best specialist around, but he obviously doesn't give a rats ass about his patients.
  • @romeike89 Wow, yeah definitely find another doctor. I changed clinics in the beginning of my pregnancy because my doctor didn't seem to care at all. Now I have very caring, warm doctors that want the best for my baby and I. None of us mothers deserve anything less! Take care.
  • it is NOT wrong to stop seeing him! when i was 22w pregnant I had a funky thing happening in my throat and it was causing serious headaches. I mentioned it to my ob every time I was there and even called a few times because I just felt like something wasnt right. Finally after 6 weeks of hell, I randomly took a pen light and looked at my own throat to find that my tonsils were swollen and covered in white bumps. I am a resident doctor and a high risk patient.. later that morning I had an appointment with my cardiologist (high risk bc of genetic heart condition) and I asked him to just take a peek at my throat.. of course, he was like "ok, well I cant diagnose ya, but your OB needs to take a look at that infection in your throat" leave the cardiologist, call the OB and tell him what happened and my OB said "Ok.. so, youre calling me about a post nasal drip and some congestion? Just take a sudafed or something...i don't need to see you for that"
    1. should not take sudafed during pregnancy..
    2. i just explained to him that there was an INFECTION in my throat and he turned me away
    3. 2 other medical professionals "diagnosed" it prior and he ignored me
Well, that was the last straw and I switched practices.. Guess what girl? I had MONO!!! I am JUST getting over it now! Some doctors are negligent. I hate to be like this as I am entering the field myself but be your own advocate, find a doctor that makes you feel safe and cared about. end of story!
  • i would also formally complain he could have killed you!
  • @lilmama19 @ll10 @lilbun915 @ncoughlin08 I don't know how to file a complaint. He has his own practice. I'm glad I realized what I did, because I usually go back to bed, and if I had, I wouldnt have woke up
  • what is is name? or the name of his practice?

  • @romeike89 i understand the doctors here are similar. its frustrating but there's not much I can do about it.
