Calling all military wives/girlfriends!!

edited August 2011 in Military moms
How many of us are there?! I feel like with everyday that passes I find out more and more of us belong to the "Silent Ranks" club!! What is your story?! Where are you stationed?! How long have you been a member?! What are your feelings on the military life?!

My story is kind of long and creepy in a way hahaha but my boyfriend (Kyle) and I met six years ago. My best friend's house had burned down so her mom moved them 4 hours away to be closer to the rest of their family. For her 16th birthday I went to visit. We went over her friend's house one night to hang out and her older brother was there (Kyle). Needless to say it was love at first sight lol only I lived 4 hours away and was only 15 (he was 17). He had no cell phone or AIM account so we weren't able to keep in touch other than me asking my friend how he was doing. Through updates I found out he moved out, got a girl pregnant, and had joined the military to clean up and support the baby. Boy was I upset to hear that lol but I still always joked with his sister that I was going to go to college up there and we would be married one day. He wound up marrying the girl he got pregnant and deployed to Iraq so I gave up on that dream. About half way into his deployment though his sister informed me that they were getting a divorce and gave me his email. I wrote to him and he responded! We emailed each other for the entire rest of his deployment and when he came home we exchanged numbers. We always tried to plan meetings but him being stationed 13 hours away made it very difficult. We were text buddies for two straight years when finally one day I decided I was just going to get up and drive down there to see him (keep in mind that we had only met once and it was 4 years ago at that time - hence the creepy part lol). But... I did it. I drove 13 hours by myself to go see him! It was the most ballsy, idiotic, reckless, etc. thing I had ever done but turned out to be the best week of my entire life!! Went I went down he told me he wasn't looking for a girlfriend and we laughed about it anyway being that it would be long distance. By the end of the week, he asked me to be his girl and we have been together ever since. Four months after we got together, he served his second tour in Iraq (12 months). We were long distance the entire four months before that and then spent the entire 12 months apart but managed to make it despite the odds. He came home and blessed me with a beautiful post-deployment present, our baby boy :D I finished my spring semester and have recently moved to Savannah, GA so that we can be FINALLY be together and in 10 days we will be celebrating our 2 year anniversary :X I am not the biggest fan of the military life but I wouldn't trade him for anything so I put up with it lol I know how hard it truly is and I have great respect for all of the other wives/girlfriends out there who are going through the same thing.

  • I'm an Air Force Wife. In a month it will be our 1 year wedding anniversary. My husband joined three years ago but didnt go to boot until 2 years ago. I'm stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC. Which is like an hour from Raleigh. I'm 19 so being 16 hours away from home for the first time doesnt make miliraty life any easier! :) We are taken care of though and he cant get laid of so I really take everything as a blessing rather than negative. However, I dont like how getting leave is SO hard for him!!! I get sad because I know he's gonna miss alot of our childs first year because of deployment, but I try and enjoy everything while I can!
  • Congrats!! I'm 21 and I agree that being this far away is very difficult! Especially because I don't know anyone out here and will have no help but like you said, I try not to look at it as a negative because we finally get to be together!! The whole leave thing is EXTREMELY frustrating... along with the long hours, staff duty, field exercises, etc. lol I'm sorry that you are going to have to go through a deployment during your child's first year though. Is it your first deployment together? How long will he be gone? :(
  • @stbmilitarybrat are you stationed at Ft. Stewart?

I met my husband two years ago, while I was going to college at GSU. I was at a local bar/club. I saw him across the club, with his friends playing beer pong. His friends came over to my friend and I and started talking to us. Eventually he came over, and was being kinda shy. He sat down and kept smiling at me, and asking me questions. Eventually he asked me for my number. Later in the night, we danced and had a lot of fun. He was actually embarrassed to tell me that he was in the army, he thought a bunch of college girls would think its lame. But I didn't mind, I've actually never known anyone personally who was in the military until I met him. I though it was good because he had a head on his shoulders, a job, and knew what he wanted for his future. He had to drive back to base at the end of the night, so we said goodbye. The next morning he texted me at 7am!!! I was like woah there guy. My class wasn't until 1pm so I sleep in, lol. But it was cute. And he came back to see me the next night, and we've been together ever since then. 6 months after we started dating, he asked me to marry him, and of course I said yes! :) We've been married for 1 1/2 years now. And we are expecting our first baby girl September 6th!!! :) We're stationed at Ft. Stewart, GA. And luckily he hasn't deployed yet!!! (he's been in the army three years, this october) So we've been totally together for the past two years!
  • OMG I agree. He works 12 hours shifts alll the time, sometimes it just feels like he is a roommate :/ But he doesnt deploy until next year, when our baby is about 5 months old. Thankfully, he only deploys for 6 months, whereas his friend who is a marine is currently in afgan for a year :( But, I'm glad that he's in the military because thats the reason we got married. When he left for boot, I realized how much he meant to me and how I couldnt be without him :-D I'm sorry that your man has already delpoyed and it was for a year... I dont know how you make it through that!
  • @cait_septembermommy Thats sooo cute how you guys met!!!! :)

Do any of you watch army wives?
  • @usafwife_21 thank you!! haha. yeah, I met my husband in a club....worked for me! lol
  • @Cait_SeptemberMommy Yupp, we're at Ft. Stewart! Due October 1 :) We live in Savannah now but are moving back to Hinesville as soon as our lease is up. What is your husband's MOS?!

@usafwife_21 Well I'm glad he'll be there for the first few months atleast and he'll only be gone for 6 months! It was difficult but we managed to make it. Love goes a longgg way :) I'm just hoping he doesn't deploy everrr again hahaha but yes, I am obsessed with army wives!!! The whole time during the season finale I thought they weren't going to have another season cause everything seemed to end on a happy note but was soooo glad to see previews for another season at the end! Can't wait!
  • Well, my husband and I met through Facebook June 2010 while he was in Japan... And Skype connected us. We planned on getting married in December when he came home on leave. And that we did, and we also got prego first day he came home (according to the dates its the only day it could have happened...) So I feel we were truly meant to be and truly meant to start a family together. he just barely got to come state side in July so I have spent majority of pregnancy without him and luckily his gunny helped him pcs so he could be Here for baby to be born. :)
We r stationed at cherry point air stationed in north Carolina , and I see the ups and downs of military life. The benefits we get as far as medical and housing and such is very nice, but its hard to live around motivators(not meant to offend anyone if u know what that means... Ha)
We both have a long story behind us being here.. so I have mixed feelings on it all. Ha
  • I'm a Marine wife. We are in Jacksonville, NC stationed on New River Air Station. My husband is currently deployed. We have been married 3 1/2 years. We have a 3 yr old son and I'm 26 weeks with our second boy. While being a military wife is hard and stressful at time, I love and support my husband in what he does. He is our superhero. Whenever my son asks for daddy, I tell him he's out being a superhero and keeping us safe.
  • @stbmilitarybrat Were stationed at Ft. Stewart too! But we live in pooler. His MOS is 25U, its a signal support specialists. What/s your husbands?
  • @sands3 I hope youre husband knows how great of a wife you are!!!! :)

@stbmilitarybrat I know!! I'm glad that they are having another season, I would die if it ended haha I even got my husband into it! Even though neither of us are into dramas, we are addicts for that show! I cried whenever Roxy lost her baby... I keep hoping that in the next season she gets pregnant again

  • Im not a military wife anymore (my husband just got out) but he was in the Marine Corps for the past 6 years. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune & was an MP on New River before we left. I lived in Jacksonville, NC with him.for 4 years but now we're back in Jersey. I hated it while I lived down there but now that we are civilians I miss that military lifestyle soo much!

@podgemarine That's crazy that yas met through facebook while he was in Japan! One of my friends is deployed over there now. He has been there for a year and has about another year left. I'm sorry you had to go through most of your pregnancy without him but I'm glad he's home for the birth!!

@sands3 I'm sorry to hear that... when does he return? My bf is my hero too! I got the cutest onsie for the baby that says "Who needs superman when your daddy is a real hero." I love it :D
  • @navywife Yes, the insurance and steady pay is definitely convieniant in this economy!!!

    @marinesangel I'm sorry youre going through a deployment :(

I also have a marine stationed in japan!! Hes gonna be by babys godfather!!!

@stbmilitarybrat WHERE DID YOU GET THAT?!?!?!
  • Thanks @stbmilitarybrat I'm glad he is home too :)
  • @Cait_SeptemberMommy Kyle is a combat engineer aka the guinea pigs for roadside bombs!! They might be starting combatives training there soon though and he will be an instructor so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that!!

@usafwife_21 So do iiii !! I love her and Trevor lol but Kyle is into it too... Secretively! ;)
  • @stbmilitarybrat I'm not real sure when he will be home. We keep getting different dates. It won't be before the baby though. Where did you get the onsie?
  • @navywife Wowww that is a FAR move!! I hope he is okay with your decision to make him stay hahah

@MommyX3 I definitely don't think I'm going to hate this life lol we both can't wait to move back home to PA!!

@caitiecakes Thank you for your service :)
  • I'm an air force wife :) my husband is a reservist now and we live in my hometown. But we met when I was a senior and he was a sophomore in college. He has been in for about 4 years.
  • @MommaJTall thanks for that website! I just cried looking at the onsie...especially the welcome home ones.
  • @MarinesAngel That's a wildly awesome story! Minus the deployment. They really stinks :( I couldn't imagine being pregnant through one, they are hard enough. When does he return? Will he be home for the birth?

@gatorbob Congrats! 11 years and going strong... I hope to be there one day!!

@navybabyonway Wah! My friend just returned from a one year deployment over there. He worked on buildings though so he never went out on missions or saw any combat. How much longer will he be gone for? I'm sorry he is not able to be there with you two :(
  • @sands3 your more than welcome my husband only has to do one weekend a month and I cry so I couldn't imagine him having to go over seas. All of you woman are so strong and I applaud you for that. It's not easy being a military wife but you all are amazing.
  • @MommaJTall thank you! It's the support and kind words from people like you that keep me going. It is hard but also very rewarding.
