whats the difference between discharge and mucus plug?

Just wondering because I had alot of clearish sticky stuff.lol. don't know how to explain it but its alot of it!

    Is it something u know rite away? Cuz im 31 weeks today and I hear women gradually lose it. What is the importance of a mucus plug?
