How do u know you're producing enough milk?

edited September 2011 in Breastfeeding
I had my son on the 16th & my milk arrived on the 18th. I'm sooo happy my baby latches on well! Now my concern is how do you know if you're producing enough milk for your baby? It seems I leak frequently & I just BF him every 2-3hrs or so. He seems pretty satisfied too because he knocks out all the time after I BF him. And I checked the color & I'm not bleeding or anything. The milk seems to be OK! I've had some friends who stopped BF'ing after a month bc they say they couldn't produce enough milk. Does anyone know what causes not getting enough milk? I really want to BF for at most 6mos, that's my goal so I'd like advice please to make sure I produce enough for my son! :-D

  • Latch him onto ur boob every 2-3hrs and if u don't at least pump. Ur body will keep making enough for him if u do that. It's supply and demand hun. Ur doing great. And if he's happy and satisfied and gaining weight he's getting plenty :)
  • Oh and not getting enough milk is from not feeding frequently or pumping when u can't bf. I gotta get my supply back up cuz I got lazy for a few days and gave my son formula during the night...now I'm paying for it and have to boost it back up.
  • I think the reason a lot of girls give up so fast us because they "think"
  • As long as his diapers are dirty he's getting enough. :)
  • As long as he as enough pee & poop diapers, you're fine. I too sometimes worried, but I got over it. She clunks out too at times. If she's fussy after feeding, I try latching her and if she refuses, I know she either has gas or needs to poop. I just keep on pattn her back, the truth comes out, lol.

You're doing great, keep it up!
