hyphenated names

edited September 2011 in Pregnant
Since me and my bf are fighting about our daughters last name I was thinking about hyphenating it.. it sounds like a pain in the ass because its going to b so long my last name is nowak and his is Taylor.. does anyone know anything about this when the child goes to school is she going to have to write both last names?

Do you think this sounds funny?

  • Yes she would. I have 2 1St names that are hyphenated and have to use them on legal documents. It sucks most the time but too expensive to have one legally removed
  • No she won't. On everything like state tests & in all papers you sign her up in yes. As for when sure has to write her name on a paper she shouldn't have to I wouldn't think.
  • I have a hyphenated last name, and the schools let me just use only one of my names because my name is so loooong but I do have to fully write it out on statewide tests and all legal documents.
  • Thank u so much! I think that's what we are Gunna do.
  • @2ndbutfirst is the mothers last name first or second
  • I HATE HATE my hyphenated name. It has been nothing but a pain in the ass my whole life from school and getting a drivers license it also gives people a reason to ask me about my parrents situation and why I have both. People think I'm married, there's not enough space to fill out my name on forms. I HATE it.
  • Can't u drop one?
  • I did a lot of my life which confuses people when thry see my license. Maybe its necause of all of the doctor appointments the past two years but there are a lot of instances where both come up. Mine are very long though so on computers they kickout my first name on college role sheets. I almost got dropped from a class because I didn't realize they we calling me. Getting loans. You get used to using one name then you don't say both then someone sees both then you have to explain to the bank teller, employer, school, doctor, specialist, boarder patrol, traffic cop, and so on why you have two, why you did not divulge that information at first, as well as any other question they might be curious about.
  • Ask your bf if he plans on arguing with her future husband about keeping his name and not taking his.
  • Lol he probably will that's why I think its redicules she won't be carrying ok his name she will eventually get married and it will change
  • I kept hyphened my last name with my husband.....and I already had a long name to begin with...so my license and ssn card has my full legal name but I sign my name with my first maiden name initial and than my married name. My son also carries a hyphened last name like me and for school he is registered for both but only writes one. We didn't hyphen with my oldest who is a girl bc we thought well she will get married and take on her husbands name....but I have decided with this baby to hyphenate and will go back and change my first daughters name to add mine.....and than when thy get older and married they can decide how they want to present their names. I love my name and wanted to keep my maiden name going its a very proud name.
