introducing the bottle

edited October 2011 in Breastfeeding
When? My baby is a week old, and I'm really unsure about introducing a bottle. My daughter stopped latching after she got one. I'm going to use Dr. Brown's, I already have them, with the newborn nipple.
I also haven't started pumping, should I? I still have 7 weeks off yet.
Maybe @ashleyfew can help me? I know you use the same bottles and have had a great experience breastfeeding. I'm really worried about messing up because it's been going sooooooo well!

  • I think you should give him one bottle a day. I wish I wouldnt have waited.so long. Mine refuses the bottle
  • My daughter is 18 days and I introduced a bottle to her yesterday (my mum is having her for a few hours on Friday so my fiance an I can go to a family party.) She doesn't take the bottle from me but will from my fiance!! So I know she will be fine while I'm out! I'm leaving my mum with 1 4oz bottle and 4 2oz bottles just encase she goes fussy on her or cluster feeds like she has been!
  • I heard you should wait till baby is about 4 weeks and breastfeeding is properly established. You can start pumping now and freeze it if you want to start getting a supply up for when you go back to work.
  • I waited to introduce a bottle at 6 weeks, until then we fed him with a syringe if I was away for a feeding. :) that way he wouldn't become lazy to the bottle.
  • @marysue, that's what I'm worried about, him getting lazy and prefering the bottle.
  • i would start pumping.. just so you have a good supply when you do go back.. i would say wait till at least a week and half, to two wks and when you do it, make sure someone else gives the bottle that way your baby associates the bottle not with you... good luck
  • oh yeah and start with one feeding when your that early and the closer you get to going back add a few more feedings.. i had one that did the same thing and another that refused the bottle.. he would rather starve.. lol.. than drink a bottle.. i think i waited too long to introduce it..
