Newborn gets choked up on phlegm

I had my baby Oct 14 and he gets choked on phlegm several times a day. The nurses at the hospital said it was because I ended up in a C section so he didn't get that "squeeze" from the birth canal to clear out all the stuff from his lungs. When we see that he is starting to make that face (it looks like he is choking on air) we sit him up and pat his back. If that doesn't help we use the bulb syringe.
I'm sitting in his nursery right now afraid to let him sleep alone because of this. Is there anything else I can do to prevent this?? I have him sleeping in the boppy pillow in his crib so he isn't flat.

  • That happened with my son and they took him to the NICU for five mins and deep suctioned all of it out. Ask if they could maybe do the same... He was totally fine after!
