fussy baby or colic? please help

edited November 2011 in Babies Health
I don't know if my little girl is just fussy or has colic. How do I tell the difference? My first baby wasn't like this. She's almost 3 weeks. I can't get her to sleep unless me or daddy walk her around for awhile and as soon as we put her down, she's awake. We've tried swaddling and the swing, which she hates. I have to sleep holding her during the night or I wouldn't get any sleep. I'm bf and she's eating fine, even though she won't latch without a sheild put that's mostly due to my inverted nipples so I pump too. Although she will use me as a pacifier and not take a real one. When she finally falls asleep while on the breast she wakes up as soon as it falls out of her mouth. We are out of options here and daddy and I are frusterated to say the least. So how do I know the difference and if she does have colic what can I do?

My Dr told me colic is simply a fussy baby that is fussy for 3 hours at least 3 days straight...but they are the same pretty much....my son was same way! Dr said it tends to peak at 6 weeks but will gradually get better!
  • @augustbaby did you find anything that helped?
  • Troublesometots.com may help, look at the white noise and swing article
  • @kimberly4411, thanks but I already tried everything the site suggested
  • Try gas drops and holding their knees to the belly it relieves pressure also try the vacuum my first daughter had colic and I damn near burned threw my sweeper also if her neck is strong like so she can turn her head lay her on her belly it helps them bring up the burps I know they say don't lay them on their stomach but they also used to tell you to so if your not nervous to do it try laying her on her belly it really helps
  • As long as you are right there with her while she is on her tummy then I would try that...just dont leave her alone during tummy time.
  • When babies have colic they scream non stop for hours at a time.
  • Im reading a book about sleep. This dr thinks that babies with extreme fussiness/colic have cjemical imbalance that usually corrects itself by 4 months. He believes that these babies produce more Serotonin and this can cause then to be more wakeful and in the evenings when the levels are highest can cause stomach pain from the serotonin.

I know this info isnt exactly help, but it helped me to think of my child's fussiness and crying as being out of my control. Also that it starts to get better by 4 months.
  • Gas drops download baby soothing sounds on android if u dont have android turn on.a hair dryer it works for real
  • @lala15 @ashley_smashley @kingsmama @preggointx @ 2ndtimearound I'm def. gonna try the vacuum. I've put her on her tummy and that seems to help only if she's already asleep. I don't think gas is the problem. She's not unusually gassy but I have tried bicyclying her legs and tummy massage but neither seem to make a difference. I can get her to sleep on a car ride but when we get back I don't want to leave her in the carseat all night, so she wakes up soon after we take her out.
  • Hmm well if the car ride soothes her then you should check out the seat they have at babies r us! Its supposed to simulate the feeling of being in the car!

  • @ashley_smashley omg, that's awesome, I'm checking that out this weekend. thanks for the info
  • Yep! No problem! If you get it let me know how you like it!

@2ndtimearound, that's kind of odd because I would think if serotonin levels were higher, the baby would be more sleepy. I'm probably backwards on that though...

Nevermind...read up on it, and you're right. LoL.
  • @heibes lol...yea i thought the theory seemed interesting...and i hope its rigjt cuz my baby is extremely fussy and cries alot every evening. If she isnt eating or sleeping i have constantly distract her or she will cry.
  • try different paci's... my kids have only taken certain ones... my daughter has like 20 of them cuz we had to go through almost every type to find the one she likes...MAYBE!
  • And she only takes one of them lol
  • @kimalee2288 my daughter is really colicy we have found when we carry her to face her out helps. I will put her on my hip facing out and it helps. We have her on alimentum formula cause I was unable to Bf. The dr told us to give her gas drops in her bottle too. Our dr said to just hold her when she is really bad. I know it's rough and getting no sleep is hard. We have yet to find a fix. She is almost 4 monthes and it is just starting to get better. Hang in there!
  • @babyszydmom I've found facing her forward does help. She's gradually doing better. Thanks for comments
