Thumb Sucking---HELP!

edited December 2011 in Pregnant
My little guy is 3 months old and I thought he was exploring and discovering his hands.... but had a mommy instinct that he really wanted that thumb in his mouth. Needless to say he has finally succeeded and now he spits out his paci to get to the thumb! I really don't want him to grow up sucking his finger. What can I do????

  • Just keep redirecting to the bink. My lo is 4 months and loves her fingers and her bink equally. Sometimes she works it so she is sucking on both. Don't be scolding when you redirect. (Although I'm sure u aren't) maybe he needs a different brand of bink?
  • Maybe he does.. I use soothies, just like the hospital brand. What does your daughter use? @becci
  • I think they are nami? Does that sound like a familiar brand? They come in a clear plastic box and the part outside the mouth looks like a butterfly kinda. My hospital gave us a nuk and she hated it.

  • Just be careful...I sucked my thumb till I was like 10yo & the only reason I stopped was because I had to get braces. My sister also sucked her thumb till she was 7 or 8 also stopped because she was in the process of getting braces. My brother on the other hand had a paci and never had to get braces. I'm making sure my lo doesn't suck hers, I know how hard it is to stop and I just think that its a lot easier to take away a paci rather than a thumb.
  • You can take a paci away but you cant take a thumb away, keep pushing the paci and gently redirect your lo
  • @becci I'm not familiar with that brand. Where'd u purchase it

That my fear that he will get stuck to the thumb. But ill keep trying to redirect although the little sucker keeps spitting it out...
  • The one @becci is talking about is called MAM. That's what my baby uses.

  • Lol thanks guys! Its MAM! I can ever remember the name :) self soothing is awesome btw. I wish my lo would do it more often. Everytime she goes to bed for the night she wakes up exactly 1 hour later and I have to put the bink back in.
