Runny Eye

edited December 2011 in Health
My daughter is 13 weeks old tomorrow and since Christmas her eye keeps tearing up. maybe 2 times a day I clean goopy stuff off of it. The goopy stuff is NOT green it is white/yellowish. Her eye is not pink on the inside but it looks a little irritated. At her 2 month appt her other eye was doing it and her doctor said it was most likely a clogged tear duct and that I might see that happen a bit because babies tear ducts are so small. I am wondering if any of you know of anything I can do to make it feel better? She is not acting like its bothering her I have done the warm washcloth. The other thing is do you think she may have scratched her eye? I read that when the goopy stuff is white/yellowish it means the eye is healing itself so I am hoping that it will be gone soon but I wanted to see if anyone else had this happen and what they did about it.

  • It sounds like it's just a clogged duct, and unfortunately, the warm compress is about all that can be done. If it's not bugging her, then there isn't any need to worry. I believe they say if it is still present after 9 months, it may be a cause for concern?? I have a friend who's son had this, he's now almost 6 and is just fine!
  • My daughter had a clogged duct for over a month right after she was born! I always heard ppl say to massage it, but didn't really understand how until the dr showed me. You don't actually massage the duct, but the sideof the middle of the nose. You may notice when you do it that discharge comes out of the eye duct. That's a good sign! Hope this helps a little bit!
  • Thank you ladies so much!
  • I've never had that color, but when my dd had a clogged duct I use my breast milk clears it up within a day.
  • I agree with Diverwfe. Wish I had heard it earlier on when my lo had it
