By my dad that my siblings and I were all on cereal by 8 weeks...um but for what I've looked up that seems really early to me. My little girl is almost 8 weeks and is exclusively bf. I am not ready for her to be eating cereal already. When did you start cereal?

  • About 6 months. She didn't like the cereal so she eats the oatmeal and loves it!
  • My Dr recommended at 4 wks but my daughter was eating 4 oz every hour to hour an half .
  • An my mom sed all of the kids n the family was on cereal very early lol
  • Yea I didn't plan on starting that early. She has no interest what so ever. I was just shocked that they started us so early. But we weren't bf and my lo is..so that could be the difference I guess. Just wanted everyone's opinion.
  • They probably did it to fill you up and make you sleep more.

  • Keep in mind their wasn't so much research done when we were kids about how early feeding can affect babies so thats most likely why it was so early.
  • Never thought of it like that @tinka1326
  • I got the okay at 4 months cause she was trying to eat my food. She hated cereal so the Dr said do stage 1 food. She's 8 months and eats everything no issues
  • I asked her doc when we went to her 2 month check up and she said we could start solids at 4 months. She also suggested we start putting cereal in a bottle for her at night.
  • Not sure how old you are but back in the day they started alot earlier. My mom said when her brother was little (he was alot younger than her) they didn't have rice cereal, her mom used Graham crackers mushed in milk...I think.that's what we ate too...I do remember my younger sister when she was born they started using rice cereal for her. I'm not sure if it didn't exist or my mom just followed what her mom did. Its just weird to me tho.
  • I did btw start my daughter at 10 months with cereal bc she had alot of problems with her body...sick alot. But my son I started at 5 months.
  • @sehra4177 I'm 22. That's crazy on the crushed graham crackers lol. 10 months? Or did you mean 10 weeks?
  • @britt21 no 10 months, she had acid reflux and prior to that the Dr thought she had celiac...so after months of driving an hour to Philly for a specialist we found out it was just acid reflux and they said ok to feed her cereal. She wasn't growing at all:( her weight wasn't even on the chart, the percentile chart, her height she was 95%...she was 15 lbs when she was 18 months...just a ton of problems:'( poor baby went thru so many tests.
  • It is not recommended but old folks suggest it your baby will b fine on just your bm but if u want to give cereal plenty of ppl do
  • i just started my son on cereal. he loves it! i think the oatmeal may have given him a tummy ache...idk for sure though. i think it's just 4 month sleep regression.
  • @sehra4177 oh that's horrible! So sorry to hear that. Hope she is doing well now, knowing that it was just reflux.
@preggointx last night was the first time we gave her cereal..she is two month now..doc recommended it at her check up.
@mam082711 did you start out with oatmeal or did you give rice first? I heard that oatmeal may be hard on their tummy to digest, our doc recommended rice cereal before we did anything else.
  • @brit21 it was we did switch Drs our new Dr was like she will eventually catch up and sure enough she did...only reason I used that Dr was bc my sis suggested him...now he is after her bc her kids are overweight and is trying to put her 9 yr old on a diet.
  • That doctor sounds like he needs to go back to school @sehra4177
  • @britt21 I started with oatmeal first bc dr said it didn't matter which we started first. I stopped the oatmeal though, and we're still having sleep issues, so it wasn't that. I did try rice (only during the day so I can continue to rule it out as a cause for the sleep issues), and he loves it, too! I'll try oatmeal again soon. I'm in no rush. :-)
  • Oh my doc said to start on rice..that oatmeal was hard to digest..but my lo is only 2 months. Hope you figure out what is causing the sleep issues! Sorry if I repeated myself...a little tired & in a hurry to see what I wrote before @mam082711
