Cramping and, first time pregnant

edited February 2011 in First Trimester
Hi all,

First time signing up here. We found out that we are pregnant this weekend. I haven't gone to see the dr. yet. My HCG level is in the 5500 range and seems to put us in the 5-7 week . We are having mixed emotions. I've had cramps for the past 2 weeks, felt like I was due for my period, I look down expecting to see blood, but so far none. Its cramps that are waking me up in the middle of the night and not mild. When the cramp comes usually lasts for like 5 minutes, I feel like, my legs feel so weak that they will give out. Are these normal pains ? I've read that they are from the stretching, but this bad? No bleeding, which is good. Do they subside? Anything I should be doing more off? Along with being scared, we feel happy and blessed, but also still in disbelief. Thanks in advance for the comments.

  • Drink more water and rest.

I had mild cramps like my period was going to start for the first 6 weeks or so, but they were very mild. On a scale of 1 - 10, maybe a 3 at the very worst. I think you should schedule a doc appointment soon. Tell them about the intense cramps if they try to make you wait till 10 weeks for the first appointment.
  • I also have cramping throughout the day. It's not as bad as period cramps but definately uncomfortable. So you are fine:) Congrats on your pregnancy.
  • I think cramps that are strong enough to wake you up at night qualify as worse than period cramps.
  • Every pregnancy is different, so I wouldn't try to freak her out. Cramping is fine and not every woman will cramp the same. I had a mc last year and did not cramp at all.
  • Still worth calling the doctor and asking.
  • I am 7 weeks and 3 days. I experienced menstrual like cramps around the time af was due. It lasted for a few weeks. Now I rarely experience cramping. My nurse said its due to the uterus stretching. She also said by this being my first pregnancy it is common.
  • From about 5 weeks to 7 weeks for me I had such awful cramping I had to use a heating pad on my stomach (yes dr. said it was fine as long as I didn't raise my core body temp) I think it was more from constipation pain then the baby but I couldn't tell for sure. Dr. said as long as I'm not screaming in agony and there's no blood that it was normal, and that even a little spotting was normal but to let them know if I did spot.
  • Ok thanks for the heads up. I will definitely try and see the dr this week. My hubby says I always had bad cramps when I was on my period, so this is probably comparable. I would still liked peace of mind.
  • Also the real bad cramps you explained could be round liagment pain i got those when i first found out i was pregnant and it made my legs feel weak also i just kept hydrated and they ended up subsiding hopefully this helps.
  • I'm 14.3 weeks. I still cramp daily. Quite annoying, at spurts it hurts but overall just annoying.
  • I use to get really bad cramps I had to mc and thought it was happening again but 33 weeks now and my little boy is healthy midwife told me its due to my uterus growing it was really scary
