Sick child Please help. Need an answer

edited April 2012 in Health
Ive been sick (i have strep) so ive been trying to stay away from the kids. Well now david, my 4yr old, has a fever of 103.4 I know I dont need to rush him to the ER right away, but my question is at what temp Is "too high" & requires immediate medical attention? I gave him infant tylenol, a cool bath and put a cold rag on his head, which only stayed cold about 30 seconds bc hes so hot. Im really sick and cant get ahold of my husband so im having trouble thinking straight bc im also fevered. Also, should I leave his shirt on and let him "sweat it out" or take it off so he doesnt get overheated??

Yikes. I'd take his clothes off...anything to keep him from staying hot. We put ice on kids when they're too hot in the hospital. It sounds super mean, but when kids' fevers are that high, they can develop seizures. My son has a tendancy to get that febrile, too...have you tried alternating children's ibuprofen with tylenol? That's something else to try when a fever won't break. When you get a hold of your hubby, I think he will just have to get antibiotics for your little guy since he probably has what you have. Hope you guys get it under control soon. Feel better!!

@starrxoxo9 thanks that did help a lot

@rtmommy thank you too. Usually im better at this but I just cant think straight right now. Im fevered & rushing back n forth between fevered david & crying aadyn, wishing my husband would answer his damn phone! Also, at what temp do you think would require him to go to the ER?
  • I know what you mean. I have been so sick with my son sick before, and I had to take him to the doc...must have sounded retarded cuz nt brain just wouldn't switch on. :/
  • No prob, I hope you guys feel better soon!! Being sick is awful!! :(
  • @rtmommy what temp do you think is high enough to immediately take him in?
  • @starrxoxo9 thanks hun. I hope so too
  • Different kids have different thresholds. My son gets 104 fevers easy with an ear infection and doesn't have issues with seizures...some kids sieze at 102-103. If you think you can get his fever down, try. If you alternate ibuprofen with tylenol a couple times and it still won't break, take him to urgent care.

Try rubbing alcohol on him...put it all over his skin. It helps cool you quickly. That would help you, too. :)
  • It was childrens tylenol. Thats what I meant to say, sorry @mom2ing thanks hun
  • Its down to 101.2 right now. Hes sleeping.but I keep checking him & have my alarm set to make sure he gets his next dose of tylenol on time. Thanks for your help ladies. Hubby finally made it home and actually cried because he felt so bad for not being here. Hes such a great daddy :)
