edited June 2012 in Breastfeeding
My sister just had her baby a month ago and she got the depo shot but now she is worried that it would effect her milk or the baby. And she only breastfeeds the baby doesn't want formula. Any help girls that know or have done it???

  • Your suppose to wait atleast 6 weeks to develop your supply before using any hormonal bc and then only progesterone is recommended. No estrogen
  • ^^^ Yes! Her doc didn't discuss this with her? Wow..SMH doctors these days!

And what dose the depo shot have @a_wagner
  • My doc gave my a script for depo at 4 wk check up. It is fine for the baby and I (personally not sure what the norm is) did not have a supply problem. At my highest I pumped 40-50 ounces a day.

  • Depo is one of the acceptable forms of BC during breastfeeding. She will be okay so long as she keeps up with establishing and keeping a good supply. Not skipping feedings and plenty of breast time for baby. Everyone responds differently to hormonal bc while breastfeeding though. Some lose supply, some don't.
