when to take baby to the dentist?

edited September 2012 in Babies Health
Just saw an advertisement for a pediatric dentistry that said children should be seen beginning at age 1. Has anyone started seeing a dentist for lo at this age, or should we wait? She only has two teeth, lol.

  • Ive heard/read by their first tooth or at 1. Keegan has 5 teeth and is 11 months so we took her a few weeks ago. The dentist just checked for any signs of disease or decay and made sure eberythlooked healthy.

My oldest didn't go until he was 3 because our insurance wouldn't add him on until then. Weird cuz they automatically added Jack when he was born. Jack will go by age 1
  • So does anyone know if you take them even if they don't have teeth? My baby just turned one and doesn't have any :/
  • I was wondering the same thing..but I am going to buy a small toothbrush and brush her teeth with water
  • @Trinsha718 they have baby tooth brush and tooth paste they can swallow, its by orajel and sold at walmart or bru
  • I took Lily when she was about 12.5 months and had 10 teeth. They cleaned and polished them and the dentist gave us a lesson in oral health and expectations. We had a very pleasant experience. Call a local pediatric dentist and ask them when they recommend your child be seen.
  • Mkay, thanks ladies! I'll be calling to find out more on Monday. Gum disease runs in my husband's family.. he's 26, and he only has a few of his own teeth, so we won't be taking any chances with the kids.

  • @mama_kat hmmm.. the office that was advertised said specifically that they see children as young as one, but its in another town (about 45 minutes away). I had planned to call some in our town.. I think I'll do some research on this gum disease thing, and if its necessary, I'll just take her to that one office. That commercial really got me thinking about this, lol.
  • @Mama_kat....I was thinking the same thing but didn't post lol...I've tried numerous times for my 2 1/2 year old and where I am, they won't see him til he's three...however I am obsessive about his teeth, so I'm not worried lol
  • Im in texas and Alanah is on medicade and they wanted me to start taking her at 6 months but she only had 2 teeth then so I waited untill she was a year and she will get check ups every 3 months to see how thing are going.
