epidurals

edited March 2011 in Pregnant
For all the moms who have already had children, is it true that epidurals cause back problems later on down the road? Some of my friends complin about lower back pain a few yrs after childbirth. Is this common? This is my first child and I want to have a epidural because I'm petite and I don't want to be in pain. During childbirth or yrs to come

  • my aunt had her last baby 21yrs ago.n she said she can steel feel the pain today, b_t u would think now days they are probably more experienced, my friend had a spinal block @ith her second n she said its so much better than epi, n recovery is easier 2
  • I have had two epidurals and no problems. And both kids are great. So never understood how people ended up with problems. But plan to have one with this baby too!
  • yea I had an epidural...twice the same preg cuz they messed it up for me, and still ended with a c-section. I've had back problems since I was born but after the epidural nothing got worse or better. But all my other friends had it as well and none of them have any problems. So I think it really depends on the person as well...just cuz one person had back pain from it doesn't mean that everyone will. Great luck!
  • I had one with my first child I've had no prolonged problems from it. The only issue I had was the epidural only took to the right side of my body.... felt everything on my left. If its not positioned the right way exactly in ur spine this can happen but nothings 100% on anything during delivery tho, but best wishes and id still go with a epidural just know there not perfect! Lol
  • I had it with my first child and started to get it with my second but didn't get the drugs I wanted to long the baby started coming out. But I haven't had back pains and plan in having it with this one I couldn't imagine having a birth with out one my first made me tear and had to get cut I'm very tiny
  • I have had spinal with both excellent no problems I have had some friends who have had epidural for natural or c sections and only one side of the body went numb or it didnt work at all somwtimes it falls out and they have had some sort of backpains from it and I know people who didnt have a problem at all.
everyone is different and everyone reacts different....everyone I know who has had a spinal has had no problem but in saying that I dont know if u can get a spinal for natural or if you have to have c sections.....i had two c sections I think its best if you are @orried speak to your docter about it they will let you speak to an anethioligist also hope that helps <3:-D
  • No epidural with the first two but I did with the last one and I plan to again with this one. I think it depends on the experience of the anesthesiologist.
  • Thanks everyone. They were scaring me. Had me thinking epidurals were bad.
  • I had an epidural and at first only one side of my body was numb but by the time I started pushing, both sides were completely numb and I didn't feel a thing. I didn't have any problems after having an epidural. I will definitely be getting an epidural this pregnancy as well. This is coming from someone who hates needles but the epidural was worth it. I heard one too many horror stories of woman who planned a natural birth but then when they realized the pain was too much for them to handle, asked for an epidural and was told it was too late.
  • I'm pregnant with.my first but when I was 17 yrs old I had to get an epidural for a knee injury and had it in for about 5 days. I don't have any problems in my back or anything. But I'm not sure if I want to go natural or get the epidural.
  • Most of tha back problems stem from weak back muscles from carrying the extra weight and not working those muscles back up. not because of an epudural.
  • It took the doctor 5 times before successfully getting my epidural. I didn't feel a thing while in labor. I have really bad back problems now but my chiropracter thinks it has nothing to do with the epidural. He said I have a tilted pelvis which was made worse by the pregnancy and it happens to a lot of women.
  • I had my daughter when I was 16 and I got an epidural. They stuck me twice in two different spots and it hurt like hell! I do still have back pain to this day. If I have another child I would want to research natual methods of childbirthing.
