My patient said WHAT?

edited October 2012 in Just for Fun
I was talking to a patient of mine yesterday while triaging her and we started talking about how overly-paranoid parents have become in the last fifty years or so. This is when she decided to tell me that when her son was two, she put him in the front seat (probably around 1960s or so). She began to drive on the highway, made a turn and her passenger door wasn't closed all the way. Her two year old son flew out of the car and she said she panicked thinking she ran over him. Laughed about it. I was astonished! It's SO not funny, but funny at the same time. He was perfectly fine and has his own family of five now. I cannot believe a stranger could EVER admit this to someone! Totally speechless.

It's amazing how it used to be...and how kids were just fine. Not saying put your two year old in the front seat of your car...but you catch my drift.

  • I wouldn't say it been over fifty years.. my brother rode in the front seat from birth, and he's only 13.. and we used to pile into my mom's little ford escort station wagon.. her and little bro in the front, four kids in the back seat, and then two, sometimes three, kids in the hatch.

I abosolutely hate that parents have to be so paranoid these days..
  • @lucyloo288 we still pile in my moms tiny car.
  • It is crazy how things are different now...even how the laws have changed in the past 10 years for car seat laws. My mom has a picture of her driving on the hwy and me breastfeeding from her. I dont know why my dad wasnt driving instead of taking a picture but it was something they didnt think twice about. Something that my mil did to my husband when he was a baby was she would give him pepsi or coke in his bottle when he was 8 months old!!! I dont know if thats me being paranoid but I see that as boarder line child abuse. He has such a messed up stomach as an adult and I blame the coke eating away the lining of his poor little belly. ( not really but still)
