Failed 1 hour glucose....question

edited July 2013 in Pregnant
They said my number was 140 and the cutoff is 135. They want me to do a 3 hour test where I'll have to fast for 12 hours, drink TWICE as much glucose (that's 100grams!!) then take my blood once an hour for 3 hours. Is my number close enough to respectfully decline? @homebirthadvocate ? I've never had gestational diabetes and this is my 13th pregnancy. I can't imagine putting myself through that torture with all the kids to take care of, an injured husband and severe anxiety and depression at the moment.

  • Ok I'll do that then, I have an appt Wednesday & I'll talk to my main ob. He's usually pretty reasonable. THANKS! @homebirthadvocate
  • Agreed ,where I live it's 140 and I was 157. Then after fasting I passed!
  • If i remember correctly i passed the second one and failed the first..
  • I never failed cause i had the 3 hour test from the beginning.

My dr. still wants me to take it. The other option he gave me was to test my levels upon arising & 1 hour after every meal & snack for 3 weeks. He actually pulled out the "it's for the safety of the baby" card on me. He's never done that before. I've taken a week & a half & still haven't decided what to do. I get severe morning sickness if I don't eat soon after waking up. I'm really anxious about even trying the 3 hour. :(

  • @homebirthadvocate You're so right. I think I'll have him order me the glucometer (or whatever it's called) & just do a few like you said. I'd be curious to see for myself anyways. Thanks!
  • @homebirthadvocate I'm sorry to keep bugging you, but do you think these numbers from today are ok? (or anyone else who knows! Lol)

    Upon arising 93
    1 hour after meal 120
    1 hour after meal 128
    1 hour after meal 93

? Not sure why the last one was so low, I took it twice to make sure.

    Thank you! :)
  • Also, I just realized when I did the original glucose test at the lab, the nurse took my blood 5 minutes early!
  • I think the numbers look great!
  • Numbers are great! Your pancreas is working very efficiently!

  • Those look like my numbers (mine are just slightly lower) & I'm taking insulin & the Dr is very happy with my numbers. It doesn't seem that you have gd at all.
  • Yay, thank you all! :)

Wtheck?! I went to my dr appointment today & he said some of my numbers look a little high? He said if they don't improve in 2 weeks I might need to see a dietician & go in for appointments twice a week! That's crazy! He's never acted like this before. I think it's because he still wants me to do the 3 hour. @star4221 @mijita @homebirthadvocate @2ndtimearound

I'm checking my numbers since they thought I had gestational diabetes and they want my fasting number 89 or under and my 1 hour after 119 and below per the dietician. My numbers have never been over "their" limits so I'm doing a 2 hr glucose test sat sp I can stop pricking my finger and doing follow up appts. I had a few high numbers and restested and they were way lower and within range, they told me if the glucose strip touches the skin and not just the blood it can provide an inaccurate result.
  • @Jessibear Wow, I didn't know that about it touching the skin, thanks! I wonder why they want our numbers so low? That just doesn't make sense to me since they're within normal range. I notice when I add a lot of protein to my meal it helps.
  • You and me both. My mom says the same thing, apparently they are stricter with the numbers during pregnancy. Oh no problem, also make sure you wash your hands before touching the meter and testing with an antibacterial soap and nothing that's scented as they told me oils in certain soaps can affect the number and if you use alcohol to make sure it dries prior to testing. Just a couple hints. The first week my numbers were high and It was because I wasnt testing correctly i was touching the meter to the skin or testing blood that was smearing on my skin that wasnt in a bubble of blood. ( if that makes sense)now my numbers are always below that they want. Yes protein helps a lot!!

  • If it was me it might be ridiculous but they r just doing their job and its not a harmful test I would just do what the doc suggests..when it comes to things I always rather be safe then sorry but thats just me. I mean I would at least talk to the dieticion and hear them out on what u can do with dit alone to help ur blood pressure even if its just little high.
  • @Jessibear I started making sure I do the bubble thing that you talked about & my numbers are way lower, like under what you said they were looking for. I can't believe it made that much difference! Lol

@jules I know what you're saying. I just would rather do the finger pricks for 2 weeks than a 3 hour glucose test, I just can't handle it. Lol
  • Ya I get that but sounds like so far the finger pricks are coming out little high just like the first test so it wouldn't hurt to talk to the diaticion that's just me though..
  • @jules yeah, I'd like to talk to a dietician actually! I'd have a million questions. Lol Plus these pricks are helping me learn how my body works, like I notice when I include plenty of protein with my meal the numbers are way lower. I wouldn't like going to the dr. twice a week though.

Here's my numbers today, I think they look much better:

    Upon arising 89
    1 hour 107
    1 hour 109
    1 hour 117

  • @homebirthadvocate Can you come to Ohio & take care of me?! I can't wait to see if he wants to induce later, there's no way I'll do that. (especially just bc he thinks the baby is big) I can't get a midwife with my insurance. :(
  • Yeah isn't it crazy how much of a difference it makes. Glad what I was trying to say make sense.Your numbers look like mine do, glad my high risk dr is questioning my drs diagnosis of gd and ordered a glucose test. Hope you get it all resolved! :)

  • I know me too, I wish I could have a midwife also. My drs office drives me crazy. My friend had a home birth with two midwifes and said it was an amazing experience, that she would never have an ob or hospital birth again.
  • Well ur levels look good today looks like u have hang of the right foods already but I know what u mean just tell ur doc u wanna talk to the dietiation first and if thibgs dont improve then u will think about the visits. But for now u dont feel like doing that. Lol he will see ur numbers r great and stop bugging u!
