Prozac and pregnancy

Hi ladies,

Anyone taken prozac through pregnancy? I take 10mg every other day for panic/ ptsd. My doctor says that there are many studies saying it's safe, but I'm really weary of taking it and harming my precious little one. Has anyone had any experience with this, good or bad? I'm trying to gather a much info as I can so I can make the best decision. Thanks in advance! :)

  • This and zoloft are being recalled for pregnant woman due to the increase in birth defects. I know cuz I got pregnant while on zoloft and am.having to have more in detailed screaning. I would talk to your doctor Prozac should be avoided until they see why its causing.birth.defects.
  • Thats a very little dose so your doctor may think it's safe. I was on zoloft 50mg every night. My doctor said if I benefit enough from it than it outweighs the risks. After doing a lot of research I found that nothing is worth the risk of birth defects. So I quit taking it cold turkey 8 days ago. Granted I went through withdrawals that are almost completely gone now. But I'd rather have a healthy baby. I took zoloft for anxiety/panic disorder so I'm trying natural remedies to relieve that. Really dig into what your doctor tells you and make them tell you all the pros and cons so you can make a decision thats best for you and your baby :)
  • I just know that welbutrin is safe during pregnancy because I was on it when I first got pregnant but stopped after 7 wks just because I didn't want to take medication during pregnancy
  • There was a recent study and subsequent lawsuit regarding Paxil during pregnancy and heart defects in the child afterwards, so the FDA is now looking closer at mental supplements during pregnancy, and theyre finding that the said heart defect is possible with all SSRIs. Its not a definite thing though...10mg is not a massive dosage for Prozac, and just like with anything else, you have to weigh the consequences. Ive battled my way through w/o medication, but its hard as hell and I respect that some people choose to stick with them. In my opinion, there reaches a point where your depression is going to cause considerable more harm than the possibility of defect.
  • Yeah that's very.true. take if you need it by all means. I don't take medication now but i'll probably.start after pregnancy due to a higher risk of ppd. I still go to regular therapist sessions and that has been helping me. Wasn't until a couple of months ago that I started to feel like myself
  • @tiff87124, good deal. I think theres a massively unnecessary stigma associated with antidepressants, especially in family situations, and Im sick of it. I have been in counseling and taking medication for years, and plan to continue medication once Daniel is born. People seem to think that getting help means youre weak...and if thats the case, so be it. Ill accept weak and happy while theyre miserable over on their strong side of the fence.
  • I am on zoloft 50 mg. I feel that being on the medication is a lot better than being depressed and having panic attacks throughout the whole pregnancy. The constant stress is more detrimental to the baby than the medication.
  • I dont think I could have gone without medication for even this amount of time if it hadnt been for the counseling Id received in previous years. Althout I have clinical depression (meaning my depression is significantly more biological than environmental), one does tend to get stuck in a detrimental way of thinking. It helps to even just to be able to identify whats a product of the depression, as opposed to just feeling like nothing ever gets better.
  • Thanks for the advice, ladies. I think I might try to go without the prozac during my pregnancy. I might lose a little sleep because of it, but I'm terrified of staying on it and causing my baby to have birth defects.
  • I just got put on zoloft as my doc said it was safe in pregnancy and I'll be ttc in a few months. I looked at the pill bottle and it says 3rd trimester use may cause health problems, discuss w doctor. Wth?! Its 50mg once a day.
  • @katlilly Thats the thing, my doc says the prozac should be fine too. I just don't know if it's a risk I want to take. Doc said these drugs (ssri's) were thought to be safe until a recent study...and that he didn't think the study was a good one!?! I guess its a decision we all have to make for ourselves after weighing the possible risks with the benefits.
  • I take zoloft and my doctor recomended me to get off before 3rd timester. Online it states half way through. My doctor said the baby could have withdrawls. I take 25mg per day. I'm meeting with therapist to try and wean myself off.
