Abnormal pap having a colposcopy

edited March 2011 in Health
Anyone else have an abnormal pap and have to have a colposcopy? I'm kinda scared and don't know what to expect. I've never had an abnormal pap until now.

  • Yes that happened to me about 6 years ago. I was terrified. The procedure was very uncomfortable but it didn't turn up anything. I had to get paps every 6 months for about 1 1/2 years to keep an eye on it. But I never had an abnormal one again. I hope you fare just as well.
  • I did too, I go in Thursday for mine. I'm scared too. Hopefully everything will be ok for the both of us. [-O<
  • I did too at the beginning of my pregnancy (now 23 weeks). The procedure is uncomfortable, but not unbearable. It's not fun to go through, but worth it to know that there is no cervical cancer. A lot of the time the abnormal veld are caused by hpv, which flares up during pregnancy due too the hormones. I hope everything turns out well! Keep your chin up :-)
  • I had an abnormal pap and had to get that procedure done. She said I had a couple of abnormal cells but was on the lower end of the scale. Its slightly uncomfortable but she explained everything she was doing the whole time. I have to go back after the baby is born to get it checked out. Good luck and let us know what she/he says...if that doesn't sound weird lol
  • Thanks everybody for the words on encouragement! Being pregnant has definately thrown my body through a loop. I will let everybody know what my midwife says. She's really good at making me comfortable!
  • @kriss82001 good luck to you also! Hope we both get good news.
  • @jessica28 thank you, I'm so scared because after I found out about the abnormal pap, I found out that my grandma had cervical cancer, my mom had precancerous cells so that's why she had a hystorectomy right after I was born, and my Aunt has uterian cancer, and my sis has problems too. I know that they say they haven't found a genetic link yet, but that's a heck of a coincendence! When do go in for the test?
  • @kriss82001 I go in tomorrow morning. My mom and nobody in my family has had any problems like this. So I'm hoping it's nothing major. It's so scary though and ive been worrying all week since I found out
  • @jessica28 it's probably just the hormones messing with us. G'luck tomorrow, let me know how it goes!
  • Happy to report that my apt went great! No major problems. @kriss82001 hope your apt goes just as well!
  • @jessica28 That's great! I'm so happy for you!
  • I had an abnormal pap(found cancerous cells) a few years ago and had a copo.. I was 18.. it was scary.. but nothing came back. Just make sure you go when you need to.. I was SOOO scared to go back I didn't for a year and half.. luckily everything is 'fine'. No changes in the cells.

If it was hpv don't be to worried.. a lot of woman have it and it usually goes away by itself after 2 years..
  • I had an abnormal pap 2 yrs ago, mine is for hpv, went through over a year of being monitored. In a colposcopy, they put vinegar on your cervics and look @ it through a microscope mine had it up on a tv. But if you look @ it, red & pink is good, if anything is abnormal it will be white. But I scared myself with hpv I thought I was going to die or something. Healthy young woman can handle it, sometimes shuts it down completely, it seems huge right now but just breath. Don't let your mind get the best of you. Good luck
  • When the nurse called me at work and said I had hpv. I thought it was like hiv. I didn't have a fancy phone like I do now. I seriouly thought I was dying and didn't tell my bf til I researched it. He was ok with it since it doesn't affect him.. jerk. I wonder if he gave it to the girl he left me for.. I nvr knew how it worked.. seemed like ,y doctor didn't know either! Stay possitive girl!
  • I had it done in 2009. It was tramatic for me. Np told me it was simple procedure and I could come alone. It hurt like hell and im a tough girl. I could see the chunks off tissue they were removing. I barely made it to my car to drive myself home. I cried the whole way home. Wish I had gotten my mom to take me. Then my results came back stage 2 dysplasia. I have to have a LEEP done to shave off layers of my cervix. All at the young age of 28. It sucks and was a depressing time in my life. Hope the best for you. Wouldn't wish my experience on anyone and im not normally one to be a wimp and complain.
