the good old days literally

edited March 2011 in Pregnant
When I was growing up my parents, really any adults within our circle, word was law. Didn't matter if u didn't like it or agree, what they said went. If adults we're talking you didn't interrupt. If they said sit u sat, jump u didn't even ask how high, and don't get me started on back talk. The belt wasn't even a factor half the time, her EYE did it. Put the fear of god in me, lol. Now adays I see a lot of parents who would rather be friends with their children and wonder why their " sweet lil angel " doesn't listen. I'm not sayin that u have to beat your child to get respect. I'm just sayin be a parent rather than a friend, in situations where u can't be both. To this day my mother is my best friend, best believe she knows all my friends business, but I'm 23 n if she gives me that stink eye I kno I done messed up, n I better shape up.

  • Thats exactly how it went in my home with my parents. Their word was law, if me or my siblings got out of hand they would give you that EYE and or my mom would say "thats it lets go to the bathroom" and without even a physical discipline, we didnt know what she really meant behind that EYE. Now being an adult and being 20 years old she is also my best friend and also knows ALL of my friends. I havent disrespected her or got out of hand. She always had me in that control MORALLY. :X
  • I want to instill the evil eye method with my children too. Seems to work effectively and I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to do it like my mom. Shes like my super woman :)
  • I hate it when parents cant control their children. Leads to a worse and worse society every time someone fails to be a proper parent. I can only hope that i'll know how to raise mine to be a respectful, obedient, loving human being. Also hoping i'll have enough support from my bd, read so much about how males love to slack on their duties in todays society
  • Lol, my great grandma did it the other day. I went in her cupboard nd wen I closed it she was lookin at me wit the stankface. Took everything I had not to laugh
  • Even the kids at my job recognize that evil eye, and I'm not allowed to beat them. Lord knows I wish I could sometimes.

I do believe that children should have consequences. And rewards. And they should know that if they're acting a fool you'll find out and make them regret it.

I don't want to be like my dad's dad and belt my babies, though.
  • lol me too! my mom was/is amazing like that. she hardly ever spanked us but we knew when she got that look on her face that she would if she had to! im 28 and she still looks at me like that when i act silly ;)
  • It really works! I love my mom and her ways of doing it and yes mine still does it to this day and I laugh.
  • I had my dys don't get it twisted. my pms dys were crzy. But I feel I grew into a well rounded woman. Not disrespectful to adults, help out others, and manged to get my assoc in liberal arts, workin on a bach in criminal justice, thou I'm thinkin bout switchin my major. Iono I just feel more prents need the pricipals that the mothers of the old days had.
  • Lmao the other day I was on the train, I lve in nyc and two guys get on wit the cutest little girl. First she didn't want to sit, then wen she sat she wanted to look out the window. Ok fine. Started kickin the ppl sittin next to her. Then one of the guys sellin candy cme on nd she wanted m&ms. Literally screamed from for 2 mins. Then she finally got the candy, but was mad cuz it had nuts and threw them. hit some lady n the guys didn't even apologize. Smh
  • Wow. The EYE was needed. lol and I had my teenage moment as well but somehow she still had some kind of control over me. I had so much respect from I guess on how she raised me. She respected me and I knew she was my friend but she was my mother first. I would love to see parents holding that mentality. Children of today would be so different.
  • I agree 100%!!! My step mom let's her 14 year old daughter drink, smoke cigarettes, smoke pot, stay out all night, she will bring her to her "crush's" house who is 21 mind you, doesn't make her do any chores around the house, let's her tell my dad he is a piece of s*** and she can't wait until he f***ing dies!! Yea its horrible! My dad has 2 children with her, 9 and 5, and now she is letting them do/say the same things. My 9 year old sister was at a friends house for 4 days before she came home and she never once had to check in! Just because she wants to be "friends" with her kids! It disgusts me!! My dad is 20 years older than my step mom, and he is disabled and has to take vitro pills for his heart to stay beating fast enough and he walks with a cane or a wheel chair. She disgusts me so much!! If my dad tells her daughter she needs to do something my step mom says, don't say that she will cut herself! Im like seriously!! If I acted like that when I was a kid I would have got beat!
  • The 'eye' totally got me, as well as my first, middle& last name being bellowed. :)
  • When I was younger I always thought that my mom was overly "strict". She wouldnt let me sleep over my friends house unless she knew their parents and if they were acceptable children, she wouldnt let me go to parties unless she dropped me off checked it out and picked me up, soooo many details but being older I now know from friends experiences that she wasnt strict at all. It was all for my own good. And to this day I have the up most respect for her. :)
  • Omg didn't u hate that @mrsdelrae? Like really a simple selena wouldn't do? Lol. N den the tones that switched up. Like she was singing or something. I tried the smoking thing. My mom found my newports n whoooo. Let's just say I
  • I hate it when people go to a restarant and completely ignore their children who are running around the place, almost knocking over waiters.
  • haha the tones did it for me too!
  • @firstmama hahahaha!!! I know! I always was called by a nickname, so when my full first name was used, my ears perked up. But when it was the first& middle I knew I was treading on thin ice, then the full name I had learned to run; quick! I never really got spanked, but I think the eye or the name hurt me more anyway.
  • Did any of ya moms play phone tag wit aunts? U hear them girl she had the nerve to.........!! Hated that. Then my aunts would start on me. It tru that it takes a village to raise a child. I always hurt more wen I felt like I disappointed her, rather than a beatin. One simple sentence, Selena I'm not mad I'm more hurt. Please give me a few b4 we can talk. Made me cry everytime
  • @newmommy17 then they look around confused like " omg they never do that at home. I don't know where this is coming from! " right.....or when they chew food and stare at u the whole time
