Does anyone have gestational diabetes? If so could you give me and my wife some pointers. She failed her first glucose test and is going thru the three hour one. I hope she don't have diabetes
Stop eatting anything sweet.....unless its sugar free......limit starches and start a diabetic deit eat 6 to 8 times a day instaed of big meals......13 grapes is one fruit .....1 peice of toast with a teaspoon of peanut butter for breakfast.....then a 10 am snack maybe a furit or something....but count the starches and sugar exchanges.....I had this with my first 2 pregnancies and prolly will with this one....it is VERY important to do what doc tells her....this affects the size of the baby and give a chance for baby to have problems after birth...if staying sugar free and watching starches should be ok.....
I don't have gestational diabetes but I have Juvenile diabetes. I have been a diabetic since I was 3. Mine is all genetics, nothing I did prevented it and nothing I could of done could stop me from getting it. My pancreas is shut completely down, I am insulin dependent.
With gestational diabetes, it normally goes away after the baby is born. If your wife has it, she will just have to follow a carbohydrate diet and will either take insulin shots or pills, depending on the seriousness. A lot of women get this during their pregnancy.
I'm lucky enough to have my GD controllable by diet. Basically, I went on a South-Beach type diet. Low sugars, low starches, etc. Its difficult to do, especially while pregnant, but I feel SO much healthier after having been on it for a few months.
You're looking for foods that have a low glycemic index, there are several online sites and books available which will provide this information for you. Fiber & protien are also excellent additions to one's diet. They slow the absorption of sugars to prevent high spikes in blood sugar after eating. Do not under any cirucmstances take carbs/sugars out all together, your brain needs them to function, and your baby needs them to grow. You don't want to end up in ketosis where your body is burning ketones instead of stored sugar, studies have shown it to have ill-effects on pregnancy.
If your wife gets those cravings for the "unthinkable" one of the most wonderful inventions I have found has been Dreamfields Pasta. Its carbs are coated with a protien-fiber complex making most of them indigestible by the small intestine. They get pass right through and actually act as fiber in the large intestine aiding in digestion. I believe in a single serving which would typically contain 41g of carbs, minus the fiber and the protected carbs only 5g of carbs are digestible. When I eat this my blood sugar typically doesn't spike more than 20 points, and I mostly attribute that to the sauce.
