Thanks! I was induced because I so badly wanted to avoid a c section with them and the doc said he wouldn't let me deliver vaginally if they got too big, and the ultrasound tech guessed they were already eight pounds. I do NOT want to be induced again. I totally plan on going until the baby is ready. I was younger (it was six years ago) and didn't really advocate for myself. I didn't realize I could. Looking back I would have refused to push for three hours flat on my back, how ridiculous! Why??? Ugh. They ended vacuuming my son out because I lost all strength to push after 26 hours of induced labor and three hours of pushing. I shudder to think about it. I saw the business of being born and it made me realize there are other ways to do things for sure.
I agree natural birth is wonderful. My first I was out of bed within minutes and home with me newborn four hours later, my second I wasn't so lucky, I was on bedrest from 4 months on, plus I had to be induced. I was fine for a little bit, but then the contractions were way too much. I ended up getting a splotchy epidurl which did take some of the pain away. I will be trying fr natural this time. I wish I could have the midwife I had for my first back. She retired after me and my daughter were born. I was her last patient.
@lovemyangels ya thats a hard one though. Twins is a lil scary for sure and more so when your young! I can't believe they had you on your back though. That just blows my mind. It stinks that dr's give you more fear, and make you feel like you HAVE to do things a certain way. Glad to know they are healthy though! Thats what counts in the end. And Im sure this one will be MUCH better!
Thank you for this post ladies! I am feeling empowered to try it naturally! At the very least I'm going to avoid an induction at all costs, even if I do end up getting an epidural. I figure there is no way it will possibly hurt more than my last labor so why not give it a try? It can't go any worse.
I do worry about how to be firm with hospital staff about not giving me pit and letting me try different positions. I feel like they always guilt you into things and I just want to advocate for myself. Of COURSE what's best for baby is best, I just think sometimes at the hospital they push what's quickest/best for the doc.
In my experiences people are a buncha jerks if they just try to 'scare' you! Let them try to squeeze a watermelon outta the size of a lemon!! My first was not bad (total labor 6.5 hors & gdidnt even stay in the hospital 24 hours & all natural). (My 2nd son I was in labor 4.5 hours total & it was a bit stressful since the docs thought he was dead since they only heard one heartbeat, luckily my Dominick's heartbeat was in sync with mine which they'd never seen before oh yeah he was born on his due date which happened to be FRIDAY THE 13TH. Had back labor & ultimately requestedan epidural cause the double contractions (front & back) were too much at that point. Didn't stay in jospital 24 hrs with either &7 now I'm hoping for au natural but open to epidural . Labor isn't all that bad! Good luck ladies
I'm planning on going all natural and have been for overt a month. I've been looking up alot of things about pain meds and i just don't want my baby being all drugged up. I really don't want to be drugged up either. Ha. My mother in law thinks I'm crazy and isn't shy to tell me so. She keeps saying I'll change my mind once the contractions start but I already know its going to be very painful. It just irritates me that she has absolutely no confidence in me. My mom was shocked when I told her my decision but atleast she supports me.
So many people were skeptical when I told them I was having natural. Either thought I was crazy or naive. I said affirmations into my mirror every morning to erase their negativity. Education is key! We r mammals with primitive instincts and our brains have complex chemical reactions to allow birth in the presence of pain and slow or stop birth if we feel threatened. Believe in the power of your body and prepare yourself as much as possible. You'll never regret it!
@birth_guru_22 my labor stopped with both pregnancies but I have never heard that it could. With my first my contractions totally stopped after 12 hours of labor my OB required me to be induced but I still had the baby with no epidural. We used the excuse of needing to get up and go to the bathroom every hour as a way to stay off my back. So the most productive labor was on the toilet lol. With my second I was terrified of the car ride over. I prayed and prayed that it wouldn't be bad and for that 15 minutes I didn't have any contractions. I thought maybe I wasn't that far along because when I got to the hospital I was cutting up and talking between contractions. But they said I was between 7-8cm. It was a great labor!! I sang, sat in the labor tub, got up and moved around, danced a little, my doula would massage my feet. And when it got really intense my husband or doula would squeeze my hips.
I am really looking forward to this birth!! Can't wait to meet my little man in May and have another great labor!
with my son I had toxscemer poision so i had to get induced at 38 weeks I went in the hosptial dec 12 n had him dec 14 ( virginial birth) I didn't get the eqidaul until the 2 day the epidaul ran out n I pushed him in 20 minz of been 9cmz they had to cut me down there I didn't even know they cut me until they where soain my virgina n they were clean my son this time I'm goin all natural birth no pain med cuz they didn't even help cuz it ran out
I'm really leary of this thread, cuz I've had horrific back labor with NO epidural last time & yes I'm pregnant again...on purpose. I think every person & situation is different & painfree cannot be guaranteed. However, last time the nurses left me laboring sitting/laying in bed. I was in SO much pain I couldn't think/see straight & my husband felt helpless. But I survived. This time I'm using a student doula & will attempt a drug free birth, but I'm really scared of back labor again, since I've delivered this way twice. Not every town offers the option of midwives, doulas, a variety of natural birth classes or birthing centers. Consider yourself lucky if u have those options...but it may not be available to others. Thus natural painfree may not happen for everyone.
@MotherHood if you have back labor you can get tennis balls (or clenched fists in a pinch) and someone else can apply counterpressure on your sacrum. It helps move the bones around some and should releive some of the pressure off your back. If that doesn't work you can also try kneeling on all fours or laying on top of a stack of pillows with someone squeezing your hips. I was nervous about back labor with my second but it didn't happen. Every birth is different
I had back labor and it wasn't that bad. I did bradley method classes so my husband and I understood what was going on. We quickly switched from me being on my back, to being on all fours. I had one person holding my hands and two people on each side of me pushing on my lower back during each contraction. the only time I needed this was when I was going through transition. That only lasted about 20-30 min. I would flip occationaly for the nurse to check my diallation. Once she told me I could push the pressure on my back want needed I had no pain at all. I had to give birth on my back because of the back labor. Our original plan was to give birth squating. Bradley helped us so we were educated about what was going on, I didn't have to fear, and both me and my husband had a plan for anything that could happen. We knew before going in what we would do for back labor, and we had practiced. Its all about educating yourself!
I can't reccomend bradley enough. Not only did it educate us on our natural childbirth and what to expect, it was also a beautiful bonding experience for me and my husband. After 9 years together you start to think bonding has passed, but it was realy nice to spend time together and focus on our new addition. It was also nice to have somebody else tell my husband what I was going through.
Someone said in an early post about handeling docs and nurses pushing drugs... my husband had training on how to advocate for my requests. I didn't have to say one word to the hospital staff, he took care of everything. And when I was worried I couldn't do it, which did cross my mind (not from pain, but from being tired from pushing) he told me all the right things to empower me to be an amazing mom our natural bith probably wouldn't have happened if bradley hadn't told me everything I know.
When i finally conceive i want a natural birth, i watched pregnant in america also on netflix instant watch, and i mad my choice then, if women did it way back when, then by the Grace of God i can do it too!
In the folder of information my midwives gave me it suggested referencing this site, www.mymidwife.org for questions. She said that it would have the same information their office has. I suppose your midwives may not agree on all points, but it has a lot of information on natural births.
@homebirthadvocate This is my first pregnancy but I have been feeling like I would really, really like to try and give birth natural. I absolutely do not want a c-section (even though I know there are some reasons you must) and also am not fond of all of being drugged thus resulting in my newborn receiving the drugs also. I will not lie though...I am very scared but would love to have a natural birth. When is the best time to start the bradley method classes? I am only 13 weeks now but I think and dream of the day I will deliver my baby. And I read before about the ball you can sit on while in labor and was wondering if the hospital doesn't have one, can you bring your own or will they tell me to get my butt back in bed? I guess I need to educate myself more on what my rights are when it comes to whoever at the hospital telling me what I can and can't do. Lol
Thanks for ur encouragement ladies! I will look into Bradly. I'm using a doula, because my husband is not an assertive personality & I think we both need an advocate during labor. After doing more research, I should NOT have labored on my back. All fours would've really helped. It IS about educating urself...I just didn't know what I didn't know...if that makes sense! And I really thot the nurses would HELP me labor, but they left me high & dry & fending for myself!
For first timers wanting to plan ahead and explore your options, read Marsden Wagner's book Creating Your Birth Plan. For tons of awesome info, read Gail Dahl's Pregnancy & Childbirth Secrets. For labour prep Penny Simpkin's The Birth Partner. All awesome books in my collection. @blissmarie23 I'm amazed after being induced you still managed the pain, you are incredible. I wonder what happened to bring your labor to a halt? How were you induced? I'm planning a home birth this time but facing a possible c-s due to a low laying posterior placenta. I'm really scared.
@birth_guru_22 im not really sure how my labor stopped other than I was freakin out about the hospital. I got there and they said I was at 1cm and got extremely discouraged. Then it stopped. I had a scheduled OB appt that morning that they bumped up and they did an ultrasound. They said my fluids were low and told me to readmit myself and have a pit induction. I was mad because I hadn't been able to eat since the night before and couldn't sleep because of contractions. I cheated and ate a whopper and a half in the lobby had a hershey pie and a huge coke, lol. Thank god I ate because they started pit an hour later and I was in labor about another 8 hrs. I even ate a shot of honey just before I started pushing because I was worn out. I think the honey did the trick. Because my son was born 15 min later
For everyone talking about giving birth on your back with your feet in stirrups, ask for a birthing bar and a sheet. Loop the sheet around the top of the bar and when it comes time to push, you last on your back, feet on the bar, hold one end of the sheet in each hand. When you push, you can pull yourself up and curl around your belly like you should push and have your feet up to strain against. Works amazing. I only pushed for 30 min with my son (first child) and had an easy time. I didnt get to go all natural because my son was super low and my body wouldn't progress anymore on its own. This time, I will skip the drugs if I'm able. Special circumstances this time around.
Natural is the way to go! My first born I was 15 years old. An amazing 8 14 oz baby without no mefication wht so ever! My last 2 were c sections!.last c section I was highly upset cuz I did not needed but doctor was more.about the money,.she advised me that.the baby was probably too big for me too deliver but amazingly she was smaller.then my first at 8lbs 8 oz! Now that I want to deliver naturally my doctor wont let me! I have the best of both worlds and believe there is nothing like having natural birth! My health got complicated with my second pregnancy n oh boy I do not want to remember the pain, and the amount.of time to heal! I would do anything to avoid a c-section!
