Do you feel treated different because of your medical insurance?

edited March 2011 in USA moms
I'm on the medical card here called care source. I work, have been since I was 15 years old, I pay taxes too. Unfortunately I don't work at a job that includes medical insurance. I never considered myself a person who mooches off the Government just need a little extra help. Anyways, Ive never felt treated differently about how I got treated either by doctors or in the hospital till this pregnancy. I have some complications going on and the ER prescribes me vicodin and pepcid. One I don't want to take vicodin and two pepcid did nothing! they made no effort to find out what is really wrong and basicly gave me a band aid and sent me home! they also told me I had a fatty liver without explaining anything I was so sick and so overwhelmed and peed off I just took the script and went home. Now Im scared to have my baby at this hospital and doubting my Doctor. I'm now considering going 30minutes to the nearest big city just to receive decent care. Wondered if anyone else felt treated poorly because on a type of medical card?

I don't but I have insurance through my job, I work for a health insurance company & according to the state I make to much to get Medicaid which I don't least not to me..but my friend had Medicaid even though she still had insurance through her job & said she didnt feel any diff. I think it depends on the hospital or clinic ur attending.
  • I believe you. I have heard of this although it's illegal. When are you due?
  • Yes. I'm on Medicaid and at the pharmacy they get reaL bitchy as soon as they see the card!!! Wtf is wrong with ppl? We pay taxes too!!!!
  • I am due Sept 16th. I used to live in the city 30min from me and had my 2nd child there and got Excellent care! I moved here for better schools and better town to raise my kids. Didn't really want to have to drive 30 min for all my appointments and labor and delivery. We have a hospital 5 minutes from my house!
  • Im on medicad & here in miami I have nooooooooO prblm at ALL.. Get treated well
    But ive heard stories...
  • I have cencal and am treated horribly. They sem like they don't care at asl about my needs. Even when I'm bleeding and throwing up so much I can't east. When I had a ppo through blue shield I was treated so nicely

  • Seriously I am 13 weeks I was in severe pain and extremely dehydrated. They didnt even hook me up to and IV for fluids. I hadn't been able to keep anything down for 3 days throwing up constantly. I think I'm having extreme acid or problems digesting anything. I don't know point is I was sick! help please?!
  • Problem is Ive been telling my doc for 2 months about this.... he said pregnancy at first then flu bug maybe the ER was my last resort!
  • Yes I get treated different but for the opposite reason. sometimes I feel that drs take advantage of my insurance. They try to make me come in got as many appointments as possible. Also they try to charge me specialist copays when they are not a specialist or try to charge me a copay when the visit should be free. When I confront them with it there are like "oh." It happens all the time at differemt drs

  • In this town there is no other hospital to go to. Stat care and Urgent care seems to be the same. I haven't tried to go pregnant but I went when sick previously and didnt like the care they gave. I really think I'm just going to go to my old doc. Know I'm being well taken care of is worth all the 30min drives I guess.... I really just want to save the money I don't know....
  • Yes!! I have care source too, my doctor basically rushes me in and out every appointment, never explains anything to me and uses all this terminology that is way over my head and looks at me like I'm retarded when I ask a question :\ I'm 19 and this is my first baby, I can't help my financial situation, I work as much as I can and my doc and hospital still treat me and my baby like we aren't as important :(
  • I have health insurance and have also paid a few thousand.and still get treated like crap, my doctor spends not even 2 min with me everytime I go in.and when I tell him about any pain I have he ignores me. About a month ago I went to the er with really bad abdominal pain and they were so rude to me I threw up every where cuz I was hooked up to machines and couldn't get up the lady was so mean about it.they didn't even tell me what was wrong I left there still in pain.guessi picked the wrong doctor and hospital I have really good insurance so I know it can't be that
  • I've always had good doctors (been on Medicaid my whole life) but when my husband asked my new doctor if she would be my baby's doctor, she said that since Medicaid pays horribly, they have a limit on how many Medicaid patients they take. Luckily, I'll be on Blue Cross by the time baby comes cuz my husband gets it through his new job so she will continue to see my baby :D I'd research the clinic you go to online and see if you can find reviews. That's what I did when I looked for my doctor :)
  • I've looked online I think they skipped my town or no one from here does reviews. Since I've moved here I've had trouble finding doctors even pediatricians I like. I'm having no luck in this area at all. Keep having to drive to the old city for care...
  • I have had the exact opposite experience. I have excellent health coverage and at times I feel as if the staff etc is overbearing on me. For my first pregnancy there were a few times I didn't feel movement for a long stretch of time and I'd call, they'd have me drink something high in sugar, and schedule me for an appointment same day, I'd call to cancel if I felt movement again. At the appointments I was treated with attention and was even offered ultrasounds each time at a perinatal center same day if I didn't feel comfortable just hearing the heartbeat. I'm not sure if its the insurance though, or just the fact that I have wonderful OB care. In either case, I'd not be happy at all if I were rushed through thinks or looked down upon, is it possible to search for other providers?
  • @~ gatorbob I am so sorry you are treated like this when you come into a miltary clinic. I work at one in woodbridge VA. Don't know if you have heard of fort belvoir. But we would get in trouble for the way have been treated. You should talk to the patient rep. And they can get to the bottom of this. Once again I am so sorry for how you have been treated.
  • I'm on medicaid too and I feel like I'm just not as important as some of the other women in the dr's office. It's almost like my dr thinks because I'm on medicaid I just want to take the easy way out. He gets surprised when I say that I want to go all natural or things like that.
  • Reading some of these comments makes me worried because I was considering getting medicaid but I will not tolerate being treated differently because of it. I want my child to get the best care and if they are not due to my insurance I think I might just stick with my BCBS PPO.
  • @newmommy17
I feel the same way! When I get my explanation of benefits statement in, it never says what specific service they are truly charging me for. I have many hospital sevice..$150 ect.. after my deductible is met, I'm liable for 20% I want to know specifically what I'm paying for.
  • Don't get scared of Medicaid... I was not treated badly with my 2nd in a different city everything was great. Personally I think I get profiled in the small town I'm in.
  • I've definitely noticed a difference in my care and others I know who are on Medicaid.
  • Well I have an appointment tomorrow if I still feel treated poorly I'm driving 30min north to my old doc and better hospital!
  • I think they get mad cuz they dnt get paid right then and their. Im on medicaid cuz ots hard finding a job now and days but im taken real good care of by my bd and mom. I have 2 ob dr one at a clinic and one dowtown a special dr for just babies shes also a high risk dr. its fancy but the lady treats me amazing no matter wat my issurance is I think its cuz shes passionate about what she does. The clinic treats me like dirt cuz I dnt pay u can tell its just a job to them.
  • So with my first we had the same insurance but different coverage so now we have 100% and now I feel like I'm getting VIP treatment not that Im complaining but I understand what u r all going through and my mom had medicaid with my little sister and they wouldn't do a c sec even though she needed one she tore from her front to her rear end that was 23 years ago so I'm sure there are more rules and regulations now so good luck to all of u I really send u my best wishes. :)
  • Thanks @momof22be I switched to my old doc. Decided the 30 min trip is worth better care for me and baby. First appointment is Thurs! :)
  • I go to the doctor's office in the city that's for women who are young ad on their own. I think u shoild go somewhere else
