  • I got tested for it. Im one out of 51,000. But all they did was check the back of the babys neck for fluid n ran my blood test.
  • I didn't want to get tested... my fiance an I have no history of it anywhere in our families an we discussed nothing would change if our baby had it it would adapt. I think if your not going to act on it you can cause yourself unnecessary worry. My midwife still let us have the extra scan so we could see baby but they just didn't measure the neck or anything.
  • @Vegas_gal I think we may be misunderstanding each other :P I feel silly this morning for getting offended last night. But I wasnt calling YOU stupid I was saying I wasn't stupid. No name calling intended(: I'm sorry. I blame hormones
  • I'm getting it done just because my doc won't do another u/s until 18 weeks and I want to see my baby!
  • I just wanna say... i have a brother with down syndrome and he is NOT "sick" just saying. He's actually one of the most amazing, most loving people i have ever met. Its very rare for a young mother to havee a baby with down syndrome. Relax. :)
  • I think I'm going to do it I should be prepared :) but I also don't want to worry if he or she has it I just hope when its all over my baby is healthy.
  • I just got a call today saying my test results came back positive for down syndrome.
There's no history of it in the family and I'm only 19.
Now I have to go see a high risk doctor and I'm a freaking mess!
I'm hoping its a false positive but I'm pretty sure those are rare..
  • I would personally have the test done, we had a scare with our first after an ultrasound and after seeing a maternal fetal medicine specialist we were told everything was fine. But there can be severe health problems with a child with down syndrome such as heart defects. The severe health problems that are possible would be more what I would want to be prepared for not just having a child that is intellectually different than others.
  • @gabba 90% of positive screenings result in happy, normal babies. False positives are extremely common with these blood screenings because its not a definitive yes or no, just a risk assessment. Im sure you will be fine, trust me :)
  • @rockinmomma thank you I hope so!
I will love her no matter what but it would be an extra struggle and I hope this is just a mistake and she's healthy normal .
You made me feel a little better though, thank you ! :)
  • I found out about my pregnancy too late to have the test done. At first I was worried, but everyone assured me it was okae. I don't have a huge history of it. I personally would want to know but as long as she is healthy it is okae.
  • In my case it was reassuring to have it done. Because I'm 37 my odds were 1 in 50 beforehand, after they told me my odds are 1 in 3900. I wouldn't abort if I had a ds baby, but I would get prepared in the meantime.
  • I did it with my first. Only because if it came back positive I wanted to be prepared and also have the hospital staff prepared for any complications baby may have had.
