nuchal translucency screening

edited March 2011 in Pregnant
we go in tues for this. of course my dr didnt tell me there was a risk of miscarriage afterwards but everything I'm reading tell me there is. I've already had two extreme cases of bleeding so im pretty nervous about risking losing our first baby. any ideas or stories to share ladies?

  • No stories sorry. Its my first too and am scared to get mine done. Its not even proven that the theory is 100 percent right and I would rather not stress over its health for no reason. But im curious and want to see it so bad! Let me know what you decide to do.
  • There's no risk of miscarriage at all. Its an ultrasound only, a magnified ultrasound and was the best experience for me and hubby. I think its magnified at 25X... I saw the arms, legs, spine, brain, lips, nose, everything... u also have to have a blood test, but that's in your arm... it screens for your risk for downs and trisomy 18... they measure the skin behind your baby's neck... its really awesome... did I mention, I'm having a girl and they told me then... if more people knew what it was about, everyone would do it... I got to see my little girl developing perfectly... hands down, the best experience ever... and its non-invasive...

If they determine that there is a risk of trisomy or downs based on measurements and blood test factors, they will recommend u for an amniocentesis... idk about the spelling... that's when they draw fluid from the baby... and do special testing... that's different and comes later... but this nuchal is the most amazing experience... its a regular, not vaginal us... me and hubby was there for like 45 minutes... incredible
  • I'M HAVING MINE DONE TUES AS WELL! I THINK THE PROBLEM IS WE TRY TO READ TO EDUCATE OURSELVES N END UP SCARING OURSELVES EVEN MORE. THE SCAN IS NOTHING BUT AN US AND BLOOD TEST. PRETTY MUCH TO MEASURE THE FLUID BEHIND BABY NECK.

  • Hun its an awesome fun experience I had done as well. I explained it to @dawnwaarsBaby before she went in for hers cuz when u look that test up on the internet they tell u about worse case scenarios not about all the mommys with normal results. What u read was likely about an amino or a cvs test which is done at a different date and only if the nuchal is abnormal or if u choose to do further testing. I had my nuchal done at 11w 3d and they said it was a boy (mind u he was flashing his goodies really well). But at the end of my test I talked with a genetics Dr about what they were testing for cuz my son did have a little extra fluid on the neck. So personally I chose to have a cvs done cuz I was still early enough. They scheduled that for 4 days later and those r the more invasive tests. Thankfully my son is perfectly healthy but they wouldnt have done the invasive tests if everything was normal on the nuchal. But enjoy the nuchal its just a magnified us machine. And be prepared cuz if baby is in a good mood they may be able to tell u the sex with great accuracy even that early cuz its not ur normal us machine :) I drank some Orange juice before mine so he would be awake and show us his sex and it worked :) I will say u will be there talking to many ppl so its a few hour long process. My us was about an hour but I was there for 3 hours talking with drs and all. Gl and happy pregnancy!
  • Yes... @kingsmama is right... she's absolutely the bomb... helped ease my concerns... its gonna be great! Hey kingsmama... how u doing?
  • @dawnwaarsBaby Haha thanks mama :) we r doing ok just hanging in there. Getting tired of no being able to get comfy at night lol. I feel like a beached whale shifting my weight around at night but I can handle it. The surprise at the end is gonna be well worth it :) how have u been doing? It's been a few weeks since we talked last.
  • I'm having mine tuesday as well! How far along will you be? I should be 13 weeks 5 days and I really hope they can tell me the gender since its my last scan! I seriously hope my baby is ok too! I have been having done complications with this pregnancy and hope asl is well! I hope all is well with your s too, keep us posted!
@DawnwaarsBaby how fast along were you when you got yours :)
  • No there isn't a chance of miscarriage. Unless they are entering your womb. What it SHOULD be is an ultrasound with a finger prick to check for positive or negative possibility of down syndrome or trisomy 18. In the event that you test positive for these things where is the other genetic testing such as an amniocentesis, where at which point I'm sure your doctor would discuss the possibility of miscarriage or other difficulties. And no I'm not just goibg on what i "have heard" I have actually had this done.
  • @kingsmama I had not read your comment explaining the procedure before I posted thank you so much for the clarity for so many mommies recieve exaggerate information about this procedure.
  • I just had my first one done. They do an ultrasound and blood work in your arm. All they do is test for down syndrome and stuff like that.
  • @singlemomofsoontobe3 ya that's y I don't really turn to the internet about stuff cuz they always give u the worst case possibilities and that would just drive me nuts lol. Glad I could help clarify to anyone who doesn't know how the nuchal works and eased some minds too. Happy pregnancy mammas!
  • @DawnwaarsBaby I went in yesturday and the baby was all clear! lol To us the baby looked like a boy but I know both genders kinda start the same. was yours definately looking like a girl? my dr wont say for sure until 20 weeks
  • I go tomorrow..I can't wait!
  • Why wasn't I offered this test? I'm almost 13 weeks... gotta call and ask why.
  • I go next week for mine as well as the blood test the same day....i will be 12 weeks....i hope they can determine the sex! I had to beg the bf to take time off work...this scan sounds like it will be worth it....
  • I went yesterday, they told me boy and that he looked healthy even got a shit of very distinct boy parts :)
  • Shot!!! Opps lol
  • I went last week at 12 weeks. It was an awesome scan. Told me they couldn't tell the sex this early though. Everything is normal :)
  • anybody see at 12 weeks what they thought was a boy and it ended up being a girl? my dr wont say for sure until atleast 20 weeks
  • @amj2486... the ultrasound tech said the she was 95% sure. My hub was like how long have u been doing this and questioning her. She responded 25 years, he's like how sure are u, she shaid 95%... that looks like the clitoris... I thanked her and told him, I knew it was a girl... she said yep...
