Anybody else addicted to soda?

edited January 2011 in Pregnant
I am! I know it's not good for me or the Bean, but I can't stop drinking it! I feel like I want it more now that I'm pregnant. I cannot stand drinking water, though I know I should be. Any advice?

  • Try and drink soda with no caffeine at least. How far along r u?
  • Haha, my weakness too. :)
Have you tried getting those flavored packs you can mix in with your water? I love the Black Cherry kind and the Peach Tea has grown on me too.

  • I'll be 6 weeks tomorrow. I hear soda is okay in moderation after the 8th week, and I'm. REALLY trying to cut back, but it's soooooo hard!

@LoveMyBoys what brand are those? It's worth a shot.
  • The Black Cherry I use is by Propell. They are wonderful. And the Peach Tea I actually use with a gallon of water. If I remember correctly, it is Crystal Light brand. I buy them at Walmart but in sure many other places carry them.

Just get stuff you know you like...like, do you like Fruit Punch? Or Lemonade? When you are in the aisle where the powders are, you will see all the different choices you have to pick from. But I do love the. Black Cherry. :)
  • I am addicted to Diet Coke. I have limitted my self to 2 per day now... which was a huge victory for me. I also used to be a huge coffee drinker, but 2 diets per day and no coffee is a pretty good compromise.
  • I'm gonna go get some! I think I'll grab some fruit juice too. I just got a strange craving for strawberry banana juice. The Tropicana kind.
  • Juice sounds good but when I drink ANY kind of juice I end up with ridiculous heart burn for a day.
  • I was addicted to soda too, especially cola, but gave it up when I had a friend miscarry recently. The docs told her it was because she drank so much soda that it made the baby super active and the cord got wrapped around its neck at 37 weeks. Scared me to death and made me realize I can quit soda altogether.
  • That's all I needed to hear... OMG That's horrible!

that is a terrible thing 2yo happen, sorry 2yo hear that, i have a coke when I want 2, maybe 2 our 3 times a week babys constantly wrap themselves in there chords my second ead born with it wrapped twice around his neck around his arm and around his leg. nurse unwrapped him n blew in his face n he started breathing, fed almost straight away this is my 3rd pregnancy
  • I'm around 9 weeks and I have to have a soda a day or my head will hurt soooo bad. I just chug plenty of water to cover for it. also, put A LOT of ice in your cup that way it limits how much soda you drink, the ice takes up all the room in the glass :p
  • That's me all the way. I use to drink 2 20oz bottles of Dr pepper a day. Now I drink 1-2 cans of diet coke/diet Dr pepper/ or caffeine free diet Dr. Pepper. But I also drink a small bottle of OJ, I know ur not supost to drink OJ. And I drink alot of milk at night.(2%) I can't stand water either. Even with the packets.
  • You should really ween yourself off of the soda. Its so bad for you read the calories for one with the sugar...that could lead to gestational diabetes, cavities, excessive weight gain. Try non caffeineated tea or water with a slice of lemon. Soda also dehydrates you causing you to eat more junk food and more soda...and diet is worse. The phenylenlalanine aka fake sugar metabolizes into formaldehyde in your body and preserves your fat cells. I could go on all day. Just quit for 7 days and you will stop craving that taste. Let us all know how it goes
  • My sister-in-law saw me drinking diet coke and screamed! She says that diet coke has artificial sweeteners which have been found to cause birth defects. I was drinking diet bc I thought it would be better than regular coke but nope! Its actually worse .. so I just quit all coke and I drink flavored water its like sparkling water with lime flavor
  • What about tea? is that bad?
  • Green tea and black tea have caffeine. try the brand yogi tea they have some of the best in the world. You will drop the soda and slowly ween yourself off the dependence on sugar. Really the best place to buy yogi is www.vitacost.com
And don't forget to take the prenatal vitamins too.
  • Diet sofa is the worst you can drink. If you feel you have to have it use moderation and make sure you drink plenty of water. It will dehydrate you causing all kinds of issues. If I got a huge soda craving I would get ginger ale or club soda. If that didn't work alone I would add fruit juice or lemons for more flavor. A little now n them isn't horrible, but if its daily be carefull..
  • I totally agree..just can't believe how many ladies are addicted to soda...sad
  • I've never heard anything about artificial sweeteners causing birth defects, but aspertame has been proven to cause cancer when used excessively. I didn't drink anything but water before I got pregnant, but I am craving coke like mad this pregnancy! It's making me crazy because I don't even like it. I have it every now and again. I think you're supposed to stay under 200mg of caffeine per day, so one or even two caffeinated drinks shouldn't be a problem as long as you're making sure to avoid foods that have it. Also be sure to make sure that any medicines you take don't have caffeine.
  • Is sprite good? That's the only soda I can drink my stomache can't handle coke or pepsi. But I only drink alil bit I usually drink water everyday.
  • @magcaw yea I hadn't heard of that ither but I did my research I always google more now that I'm prego and I want to be extra careful. I don't think sprite has caffeine so you should be good @islandgirl
  • @jess33 It's more of a caffeine addiction. Caffeine is a stimulant, therefore it's a legitimate addition. Coffee/espresso was my drink of choice in high school and college. Because I have chronic anemia, I needed it to stay awake. I was able to kick that habit cold Turkey, which sucked! I did it though. I've always loved Coke, but never really found myself needing it until I got pregnant. I always put a ton of ice in it (iron deficiency) and let it sit for a while before drinking it so hopefully the ice dilutes it a bit. I know I have to cut back drastically for the health of my baby, but I know it's going to be difficult. Being anemic already sucks the life right out of me. Pregnancy is going to be that much harder on my body.
  • What about caffiene free?
  • I too am addicted to diet coke. I am now 7 weeks and allow myself one diet coke a day drink tons a water and if. I want another soda I drink flavored seltzer water like La Croix u can find it in the soda isle. U trick urself to thinking its pop because it has TONS of bubbles! Hope that helps!
  • Adding fruit juice to plain seltzer water is another good sub, and it's usually cheaper than the flavored ones.
