The Ignorance of Others Astounds Me

edited April 2011 in Just for Fun
So today is Easter. I was baptized Catholic, and grew up in the Methodist church. My husband, however, is an atheist. He doesn't walk around bashing religion, and is surprisingly tolerant when people try to "save his soul" in a public setting. He finds everything about religion interesting, and happily goes with me to church when I go. Today, an elderly woman (guess I'm going to jail for elderly abuse, too) came up to him and started calling him horrible names for "desecrating God's house with his nonbeliever's sin." He politely talked to her, but it got louder, and she started drawing attention. This was during the "meet and greet", and I had had a bad night, and I couldn't stop- I went off on her, and we walked out
. My family (granny especially) tried to get us to stay, but I didn't feel welcome at that point, and it was my hometown church! Sorry, I just had to get that out. What is with people today?

  • That's awful! I'm so glad he is respectful.... it drives me crazy when people of any religion (or non religion) bash others.... your hubby should be commended!
I was baptized episcopal and became Catholic. I may not agree, but I'm polite, or if I know you well, I might ask questions....
  • I hate that she did that...clearly she doesn't have Christ's love in her heart. I would pray for her. Sorry your husband experienced that. It is not how Christ would have received him.
  • Thank you both for understanding where I was coming from! I honestly have no idea how she knew- he has had some bad experiences since moving to the Bible belt, so its not something he just tells people. He was fine with it even after we left, but I was beyond livid. Ugh. @Kate_k @blissmarie23
  • Wow. Clearly she was acting less of a Christian than you or your husband. Funny how Christians are usually the first to judge. (I was raised and baptized Catholic too.)
  • ...LOL...

I talked to my boyfriend about this..his grandmas a religious nut...and he has "minimal" belief in the concept of "god" as religions try to pass as truth.

...he said that religions main purpose is to control masses of people with the potential threat of eternal damnation...& if you look back til the times of the religious wars (the Christian crusades & catholicism)..you'd realize that religions have forced their way into the population.

...he says that god..as far as concept goes...would explain life on earth very simply..and most people look for answers that they can believe...thus..the "king james edition" bible passage..." the lord is my shepherd..."...uh...that would mean that you're a sheep...he says..lol

...the united states keeps the populace under educated & uninformed...history could serve as a better teacher of what religions do to non-conformists...just look at Israel & the middle east ..that conflict has been going on..forever...

..religions have low tolerance for non believers..& the truth may be found in science..look at how technology has leapt in the last hundred years...go back 200...he says we are not that smart..

...we must have found some significant pattern to follow...he suggests...maybe the Mayans or Egyptians held the secrets..because almost every religion condemns technology, except those ancient ones...Christianity even identifies it as evil...

    ...so...its sounds good...& I'm a believer...but my bf...LOL...(yes, he's black)...believes that any place that won't welcome you...regardless of belief...isn't prepared to argue the validity of their cause...& might be stamped as BS...lol

  • When I got pregnant for the first time they didn't know then that I had an incompetent cervix. So I went to labor at 20 weeks andd they couldn't stop labor I gave birth to a baby girl she lived 1 hour and 47 minutes and after her funeral his mom took us to her church that she had been going to for years when my hubby was a baby and me and my husband we believe in god we r both baptist we just don't go to church all the time well the guy who plays music at the church was talking and I guess he didn't know that one of my husbands friends could hear him but he said if we would have went to church our baby would still be here our ignorance in god killled our baby I just couldn't believe some one who claims to follow god could say something like that
  • I stopped going to church in 8th grade because I couldn't stand how judgmental the people were. The last youth group/church service I attended a woman told our group if we wore tank tops, shorts, or just showed too much skin we would be dammed to become prostitutes in hell. I never went back. I don't believe in any organized religion. I believe you should be able to view god in any way you see fit, without judgment.
  • Its sad because Christians are supposed to welcome people in hopes that they will believe in God one day.. tht woman isn't very Christian ....&I God didn't appreciate her doing tht I'm sure. So let her wallow in her ignorance &don't worry about it.
