VBAC (really afraid of csection)**update**

edited May 2011 in Pregnant
Ok so up til this past monday I've been considered high risk because my son was born 29 wks with placenta abruption a csection 4/12/2005. Anyways my dr has only had me do 2 ultrasounds (one was when I was first pregnant n in car wreck) and this week he told me everything looked good and I only needed to come in every 2 weeks. Anyways I've done my research and really wanna have a VBAC. I know the hospital allows them but drs wont. I was wandering if some preggly ladies can help me to form the best arguement if my dr says no, or make a csection seem pleasant. Please and thanks. I got statistics and facts from 6 websites, I wanna tie in real women.

*****update *****
So I spoke to my dr, he's one of those once a csection always csection and won't listen to anything I say. If I do have to have a csection hes the best surgeon to do it. I've tried finding a dr to take me on at 33-34wks and no luck. Also the professionals I've talked to say it is very uncommon to hear bout vbacs in this area. Especoally since i have to have healthy start ins cuz hubby's wouldnt add me (got married in june). So after calling other doctor offices, speaking to the hospital social worker, and going to pregnancy support center, I'm no closer to having a vbac. I feel defeated. And me and hubby want at least 1 more child after our daughter. Seems the way I'd have a vbac is dont go to drs for scheduled surgery, go to a diff hospital and try pushing. Butg that would be ignorant and dangerous. Ugh. Thanks too everyone tho for the information.

I'm asking again now for perks of csection. Help ease my mind bout it

  • I was completely fine during the c-section, but I'm not going to sugar coat it, recovery was difficult.
  • I haven't had one for 6 yrs and when I did it was so fast I was so young and scared that I kept going. And my son was in NICU for 8 wks so I had time to recover and lived with family. Now I have a house to care of a newborn will be home and my 6 yr old son. Plus my pets. Hubby works 55-70hrs a wk. I'm scared
  • My c-sections have been quick and relatively easy (my first son was so large that the doctor actually had trouble getting him out during the c-section, he was a bit stuck), and recovery both times was surprisingly fast. It was difficult for the first week to get up to get my sons at night (my husband would usually be up and holding them by the time I got my butt off the couch), but during the day when I was continuously moving I was fine, and after the first week the nights became much easier. I was a bit disappointed in my second c-section because I didn't get to experience any labor at all (I scheduled it because they told me my second son would most likely be nearly as big as my first; he wasn't). In retrospect I wish that I would have gone with vbac last time, because this time it's completely off the table because I've already had surgery twice. If you are no longer high-risk, and you're interested in vbac, tell your doctor that that's what you want--be direct and firm. The worst that he can say is that he won't treat if you refuse a second c-section, but if you've only had one and it was for a condition that you don't have with this pregnancy, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be a good candidate for it.
  • My first c section was pretty easy and I healed quickly. I'm set to have me second c section in August. I'm more afraid of a VBAC than another c section... I have heard some very horrible stories about them. Even my OB nurse told me after my first that if I were her daughter she would never let me do a VBAC. Her rule is once a c section, always a c section. She said she has seen some very scary complications with patients trying VBACS and they are never worth the risk.
  • Yea I during my two c section I was fine...my second one was soooo much better than the first in my recovery
  • I don't think the doctor is going to let you because of your placenta which is dangerous to your baby.

  • all bodies are different but when i had a csection with my first i was perfectly fine. took me about a week to recover & sometimes u still feel a slight pain but other than that i was perfectly fine.
  • @homebirthadvocate Even though alot of women are fine with csections I have to agree a doctor shouldnt force you. I didnt have a say and was forced to have a second csection. As soon as I went into preterm labor and the contractions wouldnt stop they wheeled me to the OR.. I like csections but wish I could of had a vbac. Now im on 4th csection and I always wonder what its like to let your body do its job..

  • I did a vbac 24 months after my c-section and what a difference! I actually was able to bond with my son and experience my own emotions - I was scared too after the Dr and then an OB told me all the scary worst case scenarios but i did a ton of research into it and found that the odds are actually higher if you do another c-section then try a vbac. I'd say go for it honey but just remember to believe in yourself :-) Don't let the drs push you around
  • @homebirthadvocate I agree, it really makes me angry that health is less of an issue than money when it comes to child birth. I wish that my doctor's had told me more about vbac and encouraged me to try it with my second. But she's the type of doctor who likes to give information and avoid recommendations. It makes me sad, especially since she moved to a practice directly affiliated with a hospital; now they won't give me an option at all. :(
  • If your sure you should do it now because after hot second it gets more dangerous and after the 3rd more i mean not the c-sections the vnac gets more dangerous after every scar personally I'm ok with c- sections I've had 2 and I'm asking for another but everyone's diff and you shouldn't have to do something u don't want to I hate it when doctors get lazy! Lol so ya if u really want it tell the doctor they have to try unless there complications but with one section it won't be nothing serious especially because it was 6 yrs ago your not so much at risk to rip. Omg like me I'm early gonna see my doctor and she is going to be pissed off that I just had a csection 8months ago and I'm pregnant again lol oops... thats y I deff can't do a vbac this time too lol I'm not scared though :) anyway try it!
  • @homebirthadvocate you seem very well informed so hope u dont mind me asking more questions. Firstly thanks for answering. And second do you think it's possible to get a diff dr if mine refuses.

  • @macgaw so looking back you wished u woulda done vbac for more options?

@1_mama_squared did u just hear from dr or others. If so please share :)

@babyluv3 thanks how long til u were able to do stuff after 2nd

Thanks for input @luvbump and @christineohh

@mountainmama he's u get ur dr to agree. And which was beyter for u

@2_going_on_3 thanks for input and what do u like bout csection? Oh and can I really refuse a csection?

  • Mostly stories from my doctor. I do have a couple friends who wanted to try VBAC... neither of them progressed enough so they were in labor for a long time but both ended up having c sections in the end.
  • I felt good at 3 wks It was so much easier to get up
  • After surgey
  • I know your in canton and my doc in canton allows vbacs I tried with my second even though it failed for same reasons as first and it ended in another emergency c section he still tried for me! He is great I love him!
  • Lol not that I liked them but I just didn't mind if that was all they could do cuz mine wernt so bad my first was small cuz I was the baby was a preemie and my second I got a bunch of ibuprofen 800 and some other pain killer I forgot da name any way I breastfed my second and I was fine when I took the pain killers I was alone all day with them a 3 yr old and nb anyway ya I would tell your doc u wanna try a vbac and if she agrees then that's it unless something happens and u have to get a csection u could change doctors if u really want 2 but first call or Google to see who does vbac cuz that would suk if u change doc and ur stuk with one u dnt like and wont do a vbac but ya if I could I would just I doubt thell do one to me cuz I had a csection 8months ago I knw they'll be scared to take that risk with me but ima still ask though :)
  • Was the incision on your uterus transverse or horizontal? I've always heard if the incision is transverse then its not safe to do vbac. I have to have a transverse incision cause my baby is breech and the radiologist thinks my uterus might be bicornuate. If bicornuate the top of uterus could clamp down on babies head so they want to get her out asap. My friend said her old incision was so thin with her second birth that it probably would have ripped if gone through labor and contractions.

  • Ohhh gotcha! Thanks :)
  • Better safe then sorry. there are positive c section stories I say do wat u think better suites you good luck
  • Well this is my fourth pregnancy and I had 2 vbac and 1 csetion so I can tell you what is best...I told my Dr I wanted a vbac because it's faster and there is no worry after you have the baby. After my csetion I have been having the worst back pains ever plus I started having cramp on my period, what it never happen before my csetion. Really I would tell your Dr is your decision...that only if at the moment of birth he notice something wrong then to go ahead!!! Wish you luck!!!
