am i horrible for thinking bout getting rid of my husky...??!

edited May 2011 in Pregnant
Rite so myself and my boyfriend are renting a house with a year and a half. When we moved in we bought a female siberian husky.
all i can think of is giving her away, anyone who has a husky will know how bad dey shed its crazy, our hallway and living room have carpets and she spends a lot of time in dese areas. I banned her from d sitting room a week ago and i just cant get rid of d hairs. She also sleeps in d kitchen, shes spoilt rotten if shes in d garden longer dan a few hours shel start crying Barking and eventually starts diggin d garden as its not our house we cant afford to just let her off with it. I knw d saying a dog is for life but i just dunno how il cope with her and a newborn and feel horrible for wAnting to get rid of her. Its causing fites with me and bd as shes his pride and joy. What does everyone tink, anyone in the same position??!!

  • I'm worried too about my dogs. They have never been around a baby before. I still have the big crate in the basement. I'm going to see how they react before I resort to crating again.
  • Have you tried shaving her? Although most huskys i know are really reyarded and have aggressive tendencies(not saying she does) if it doesnt work out dobt feel bad. Ive seen ppl get rid of their dogs for a lot less.. and as long as you make sure it goes to a good home too. You can try husky rescue in your area as an option too
  • All dogs shed I have a boxer and lab mix but he has short hair and still sheds like crazy I am always sweepibg vacuming and brushing him just cause thrashed is no reason to get rid of them
  • just cause they shed*** stupid phone
  • I had my lil dog who does shed and his hair grows really fast inside but I noticed once I found out i was preggo he was starting to pee on everything and cry about anything. So one day I got fed up and put him outside him being small about 10 lbs he can go under our gate so I had to chain him up. I feel really bad because at night he has to be chained up but I think its better than giving him away. Good luck!
  • Don't take this the wrong way but situations like these are why its so vital to research breeds before buying. Your dog is being a typical husky. With that said, I don't think its bad to want to find her a new home. If she isn't compatible with your lifestyle and is causing issues between you and your man then it may be the best thing for all of you. Just please take the time to find her the perfect new home, don't just pawn her off on a shelter. I can tell you obviously love your dog so don't feel bad. You have to do what's best for you and your family :)
  • Please find a solution that's not punishing the dog. It's well known that they shed and it's not the dog's fault that it now bothers you. Please, please be kind and fair to your animal. I'm sorry but this really upsets me.
  • Dont shave your husky!! Thats not a good idea at all. It will not help with the shedding and can potentially ruin her coat. A husky's coat is the way it is for a reason. It works as a heating/ cooling system and shaving it off can actually cause the poor dog to over heat. Sorry but I've been a groomer for years and it breaks my heart when breeds that aren't supposed to be shaved get shaved.

  • I do absolutely love her to bits and im not saying that i am going to get rid if her, i just feel so bad for even thinking it. Shes also very hyper and a jumper and am extremly worried about her being around d baby. I have also done my research and knew what i was getting into didnt think id be having a baby for another ten yrs lol im only 21 and dis wasnt planned.
  • I completely agree with @mshahir!! That is why you research breeds before buying them, or adopting. Your dog isn't doing anything wrong. But, if you aren't going to treat her good, or have any patience with her....then, I do recommend you find a home that will LOVE her! Hair, barking, and all...it's part of the package. Just like babes and, crying/diaper changing!
  • Take the dog to a professional trainer so you guys can learn together. Huskies are brilliant animals and there is no reason whatsoever that your dog can't learn to be a great member if the family WITH baby. Imho you need to make it work and do right by your dog.
  • @Rockinmomma lol u have me in giggles. Picturing her all shaved cant even imagine wat shed luk lik, id never do dat lol! @mshahir all im saying is dat i feel bad for thinking it. My bd wud prob break up with me bfore giving her away lol. I have worries lik im sure a lot of mom to be do and just wanted advice is all.

  • @sammiegee87 whos saying i dont treat my dog rite or luv her??
  • Dont feel bad I had a pug and gave him to my bf aunt. He was a lil pig and he refused to be house trained I would walk him for an hour and he wouldnt do anything but as soon as we came in the house he would poop or pee. I tried dealing with him but he wouldnt bugde
I didnt want to give him to just anyone. She has a backyard so I thought that would be perfect. Just try and find her a.good home.
  • @mshahir i had absolutly no problems with d shedding til now, my parents have a malute husky with five years im well used to dem im just worried Bout my baby being around the hairs it obv cant b gud for em .

  • We have a Siberian husky too and every book or website on them goes on and on about the shedding and how they hate to be alone. Ours barks like mad too when he wants to come in which is a breed trait and so is digging.

Weekly brushing (daily when the weather changes) and vacuumming atleast once a week keeps the hair to a minimum. If you can't keep up with the brushing take her to the groomer. There will still be hair because it does get into everything but keep her out of where the baby will be spending most of her/his time. And it shouldn't be terrible. Also if you have to lay your baby down on the floor (tummy time/whatever ) lay him/her on a clean blanket or towel. And wheater you have a dog or not you shouldn't let baby put anything in it's mouth unsupervised or not knowing if it is clean or not. You can also get a sticky roller to remove hairs from baby's or your clothes before you put them on or hold the baby, we don't but it is an option.
  • Invest in a great vacuum cleaner. That's what I plan to save up for as I have most of the baby essentials as far as toys and such go. And all I have is a lab, and a boxer/English Mastiff. Lol my dream vacuum is this one that costs $500 and is for animal hair.
  • Oh and my mastiff drools like crazy...its DISGUSTING but I've learned to deal with it.
  • @conreeagh thanks a mill for dat info. I live in a small town im ireland and we dont even have a groomer in d area lol. Nearest one is hr n half away. Ya dats y im after banning her from d sittin room cause dat where d baby will b spending most of d time! D sticky roller is a great idea will take all u said on board thanks again! :)
@momof3soon4 didnt even knw u cud get a hoover for animal hair had a quick look on net there cheapest is 800 euro...eeek!! Must b good for dat price, wil luk into it. Thanks chick!!
  • I have a german shepard that sheds (even with keeping her groomed) and a mountain coor coonhound mix. I vacuum daily (just bout) and I have a bissel steam cleaner that I use weekly. It has a brush that pulls even more hairs from the carpet and it was 120$ from walmart. As for the garden, maybe restrict ur dogs area? My shepard is 2 and shes good with my son (6) but she can be hyper, tho when babies/younger kids come over, she calms down. Like she knows, maybe urs will do the same.
  • @ashleysplash89 its actually been proven that children who grow up in a home with a dog or cat have lower risks of having allergies.

Invest in a really good vacume if you have to.

We were worried about our boxer around the baby but my SIL who recently had a baby comes over and shes actually calmer when the babies around its like she senses she needs to be calm.
  • Find a good home. Dogs shouldn't be left outside, caged or contained all the time. If you can't walk her everyday, which all dogs need, and if you don't see yourself managing the hair then give her to husky rescue or find a great home where she will get what you can't give her. Not fair for her to not have her needs met bc you can't meet them. Do what's right.
