"bashing christianity"...a clarification

the original thread is called "Controversial Questions (mature opinions please)". i am fairly certain that i am the person who is being referred to as the one who was "bashing christianity". please feel free to read the thread and see for yourself, but i would like to state that the discussion was about abortion, and whether it was excusable in any situation. i listed situations in which i feel there is a valid reason for it. several people responded that god doesn't make mistakes, and abortion is never excusable. there was much discussion about the "thou shall not kill" commandment. i stated that the bible says alot of things we do not still follow today, and listed quite a few. i was then laughed at, and told i was wrong, asked which bible i was reading, and explicitly told that it does not say those things ANYWHERE in the bible. i was then asked for scripture to back up my assertions. i provided said scripture, without comment on whether i agreed or disagreed with it. i was then told that i had interpreted it wrong, taken things out of context, could not interpret said scripture without a priest or pastor, and told that people would "pray for me". i never said that those references to the bible were not excused by context- simply that they are in the bible. i asserted more than once that i was in no way saying anything bad about christians or their faith, i even said that i do not care how or what people worship, i simply do not think laws should be based on religious texts when there are many different situations and many different religions in this country(there had been earlier discussion about how abortions should only be allowed if a positive rape kit was provided). i believe that all through these many interchanges, i never insulted or mocked anyone or their religion. i was asked for scripture and provided it. since this time, it has been stated repeatedly that "some woman" was "bashing christians" and "bashing christianity". i just want to make clear to people that i am not here bashing other peoples religions. if some people do not agree with my interpretation of the biblical text, that is fine. i only posted the scripture because people laughed at me and said that those things are nowhere in the bible. i said they are, and was asked for proof. i provided proof, and my proof was discounted. i accepted that, since many people interpret the bible many ways and i do not care. but i still do not see anything i did as christianity bashing. i am not starting this thread to start drama, but to clarify for the christians on the forum that i do not hate them or their religion, and i do not go around shaming people based on their beliefs. i would hope that everyone else feels the same way, and about other faiths than christianity.

  • I'm with ya.. :) people tend to jump to conclusions when touchy subjects are mentioned ..
  • Thank you for posting this, after reading the "goodbye pregly" post I had to seriously avoid posting something. Everyone should go back and reread that post. Not a single person bashed christians/ catholics.
  • I didn't read the other thread all the way just when it was first posted, but I found what you stated here to make sense :) you go girl
  • It's easy for people to make assumptions based on only a few words especially when communicating on email or text when body language and expressions can not be read. Some people on here often take things out of context and way to far...
  • I think you turned that post into a religion debate because no one was talking about the bible until you said something about it.

  • People will always defend their religion, had the same problen on fb, I responded to a thread on fb about abortion and completely was bashed and judged and that was by actual chaplains! I nicely said I wasn't trying to prove a point but rather giving a different side and that as a man of the cloth their shouldn't be judgement and he should be living and behaving in a way that highlights his religion. Since then have gotten no other corespondence. My very dear friend and I have a huge difference in opinion but I realize its just not worth the fight, and def don't worry about what others say about ya. : )
  • thank you, @hunnybee @NewMommy17 @mommabee13 @ghettobetty you guys are all very nice. i simply did not appreciate the way i was being represented and felt clarification was in order.

@excitedforbaby another girl brought up how laws should be based on the bible, and junebug posted why laws shouldnt
  • @excitedforbaby i respectfully disagree. if you re-read the original post, you will find people did talk about the ten commandments quite a bit before i jumped in.
  • I think she said"shell keep her beliefs on the bible" and then that's when it turned around.
  • No matter who brought the debate up first no one side or group should gang up on another side.... people take.stuff way too personal...
  • @Juneduebug ok ok I just don't want this to be another "debate" so ok for clarifying.

@juneduebug I was involved in the whole discussion and didn't think that you were bashing at all. There was a difference of opinion as to how the bible was interpreted.... that's it. I thought that you were stating your opinion and they were stating theirs. Still not sure why there were so many hurt feelings when we were just having a discussion.
  • thanks @cdswim i agree. i never tried to hurt anyone. i never even offered my opinion on their religion. i don't know how that turned into me "making jesus look like a monster" or "imposing my thoughts" on people or "bashing" anything.
  • @ghettobetty waaaaay to personally...

I dont think June did anything wrong ..she stated her opinion and sometimes people automatically jump on the bashing bandwagon when someone has an opposite opinion..
  • @cdswim i think that the "victims" were the ones who turned it into what it became. Things were taken to the extreme, far from what was actually said.

Everyone should be able to interupt the bible how they think it was ment to be. I grew up catholic went to private schools and just because I was taught the bible means this or that doesn't mean that's how I interupt it now... I know religion is very important to some people but not everyone has to believe the same thing. And @juneduebug I am sorry they were getting on you about your bible and I am on your side. U just interupt it differently then they do and there was no need for them to get on you about it.
  • Personally i felt u were respectful. Some ppl jus cant handle it wen someone opposes their beliefs. Esp religious beliefs, thats y i dnt take part in it. Frm here on out u dnt have to explain anything. U did a mature thing by creating this thread n this is where it should stop. U dnt owe anyone anything. Esp reasoning for ur opinions
  • I just read the thread. You were not bashing. Actually I only seen certain people getting offended, and most others stating view points. You made a lot of good points and you def were not in the wrong. You were not the first to bring up religion. You were the first to actually back up a hurt womans choice.

  • the one thing i agree with that people are saying is that there is too much drama on here, i could write a book! where the drama began, however, is perhaps a matter of opinion.

You did nothing wrong and i really liked reading that post and how you staied calm the entire time even when both girls got their panties in a wad
  • it makes me happy that for once everyone is backing up the "right" person.
  • i recently took a 4 week course for my anxiety, it has helped me immensely. in the past, this treatment may have angered or saddened me, perhaps both. certainly i would have cried, which i have not. i am very proud that i now have more control over my emotions, and my reactions to adverse stimuli. i truly hope that the people leaving can also find a way to quiet their own anxiety, or whatever they would like to call it, and perhaps not take things so personally. i do not hate anyone, i understand feeling that way and i hope that they can overcome it and be happy.
