about Down Syndrome

edited May 2011 in Health
So down syndrome runs in my family my doctor send me twice once in the beginning of my pregnancy & again at around 15 weeks or so to get an us to check for down syndrome which was the fluid in the back of the neck they both came back fine I also did blood work and that came back fine I'm just wondering shouldn't he have sent me to a specialist since I have a high risk of having a baby w down syndrome ? Hoe accurate are the us and blood test does anyone know ?

  • I would asume that since everything camr back fine its all going to be fine. If you have doubts you could get a second opinion.
  • The scan they did measures the babies facial bones and the neck. The tech and your doctor know what to look for. I would think that you are fine. They would probably only send you to a high risk doc if something was wrong. I would just ask at your next appt. That is why you pay him the big bucks, so you can ask as many questions as you want!! lol
  • The only way to know for sure is an amniocentesis. Just had it done and it's 100% accurate.
  • If they suspect anythin was wrong they would have sent u, seeing as they havnt ur baby must be fine :)
  • @sasha_1983 amniocentesis isn't 100% accurate, it has a high rate of false positives.
  • What!!!?? My doctor told me it's 100% accurate, that's the only reason I had it done...
  • @imamommysoon I think you have the blood screening and the amnio confused. The amnio is where they look at baby's chromosomes and is like 99.9% accurate. The blood screening has a 90% false positive rate.
  • My husband has 2brothers w ds n I was told because of my age something else I don't remember that its not a worry...my tests were all normal. ..I wouldn't stress especially if so far tests r normal...I mean does it matter? Would u terminate pregnancy if your baby had it? I'd assume not so don't put your body thru all that stress...be. happy momma enjoy
  • Down syndrome is not hereditary.. I went through genetic counselling. Amnio is 99% accurate. If you get a false positive with amnio its because of human error.
  • Sasha_r1983 Did it hurt? I am getting one next friday. I am almost 22 weeks and I also heard that the test is riskier the later you are in your pregnancy. I am just sooo scared. I am still on the fence!
  • I think u only go to a specialist if ur blood work and stuff comes back bad. The tests can giv a false positive but i'm not sure about a false negative maybe around ur 5th month they might do an amnio but if all tests came back fine I would not have one ....personally good luck
  • They did unfortunetely! :( They also told me that my chances are 1 in 73! I am seeing the specialist in a week. I had a 2d ultrasound done and I think they told me it was normal. I still don't have my mind made up but they will be able to answer all my questions even if I don't go through with it.
  • I got an amnio at 24 wks due to my blood work coming back with a 1in67 chance and a couple of soft markers were seen at my level 2 ultrasound. I honestly didn't think the amnio hurt at all! There's a strange crampy feeling when the needle goes through your uterus but thats about it. Its super fast too. I just kept my eyes on the ultrasound screen and never once looked towards my belly. It was such a relief to know for sure that my baby girl was free from any chromosomal abnormalities. I never would have terminated but I had to know so I could be prepared. Good luck!
  • @rockinmomma I would NEVER terminate either! It is just that I have 4 other ones and I want to prepare myself and them. And thinking about it everyday is driving me nuts! I would feel better knowing than not. Do you know the risks of the test? Someone told me that I can lose my baby.

@crazycat79 There is some risk of miscarrige, I believe its around 1in300. But I read a study that said that risk hasn't been evaluated in a long time and that today with the amount of amnios performed and what not that risk is probably closer to 1in1000. Its still not something to be taken lightly though, its a serious decision. If you do decide to do it choose a doctor that has experience and that you trust.
  • My cousin had an amnio. It said her baby had DS. He didn't have DS but did pass at a month old do to a heart defect.
  • My doctor is sending me to the fetal medicine specialist that is in the hospital. When I talked to her she said they do them everyday and that it is routine for them. I go tommorrow. I am sooooo nervous! @rockinmomma
  • @rockinmomma. How did everything go with your test?
  • @crazycat79 mine went perfect! Its a scary procedure but its so much worse in theory than it is in reality. The needle is really thin and its over very quickly. The worst part of the whole thing for me was getting the i.v. put in my arm. Getting the results back that said my baby was normal and healthy made it all worth it though. I literally ran around jumping up and down screaming and laughing like a lunatic lol. Im sure you and your little one will be just fine. Keep me updated I'll be thinking about you :)
  • Thanks! That makes me feel better and gives me hope! I do admit that I am still worried something is going to go wrong. I know I will be up all night tonight.
  • Us Are accurate. My son will be born with a club foot. I am seeing both specialist and Ob doctors. I Was crying and felt as if i had no soul. The father of the fetus forsaken him and i went through horrible thoughts. But i got over it with ppl praying and it helped. I went to buy all for the fetus. I cannot believe how much fun it is to baby shop for a good looking boy doll.
  • My blood work came back at 1 in 104 chance of having a baby with downs. Im only 22 with no family history so they sent me to a specialist immediately. They did find a spot on his heart and in his kidney. We decided against amnio because the increased risk of miscarriage. The specialist moved my risk to a 1 in 40 chance. So scary. We are praying everything will be ok :/
