Diaper Genies

edited June 2011 in Babies
Are they REALLY necessary? I was looking at them yesterday and I thought it was something that disintegrates the diapers but apparently it's just a trashbin with an air tight top cover. Are they a waste of money or should I get one?

  • I bought one, I don't want my house or trash bin outside smelling like dirty diapers. I don't think its a waste. But a great idea.
  • I bought the arm and hammer one. It had better reviews
  • I'm getting the arm and hammer one as well it makes more sense having baking soda to get rid of the smell
  • I would say no. Just my opinion but who wants have that much crap (literally) just chillin in the house. I personally when caregiving for my niece used to put her dirty diapers in a separte trash bag and promptly put them in the garbage can outside cause I didn't want it in the house. Sooo...they short answer is no they are not necessary. But some find them convenient. If I had one I would still empty it everyday at a minimum. :p @deni_b
  • I have the Diaper Genie II & I love it. It's impossible to take every diaper out to the trash when you have a newborn & TRUST ME... you don't want to keep that stink inside! Lol. Are they absolutely nessecary? No. But they are very helpful in my opinion.
  • Ok, I'm gonna take another look at it when we go back to the baby store tomorrow. I would think just putting baking soda in your trashbin in the baby's room would be sufficient enough without spending 30 dollars or so on a diaper genie. Just wondering if they really work the way they say they do.

  • I loved mine...but you will get a lot of responses to this thread that says they are a waste, lol! I loved it because I always changed my daughter's diaper at her changing table and it was handy to have it right there to put the diapers in. The diaper genie handled the smell really well, so you never smelled diapers like you can with a trashcan. Plus, walking the diapers out to a trashcan is a pain in the rear, especially if it's raining, cold, or dark outside.
  • I've got double diapers to change so I'm wondering if I should really get one. If I can find a cheaper one I wouldn't feel so much like I'd be wasting money.
  • I got the one that uses any 13gallon trash bags. That way im not buying the expensive refills so I can empty it as often as need be. I was told that if you spray the can down with lysol between bag changes it will help with odor.

  • Might try looking on Craigslist for a used one. They are always on there in my area.

  • @Mommy2IsaiahNGiselle I plan on starting potty training by at least 1 1/2 and at 2 to have them going to the potty with undies in the day and with pull-ups at night. So I don't know what more use I can get out of the genie after the first year.

  • @Mommy2IsaiahNGiselle The diaper thing is going to be tough with twins so I plan on getting them in the habit of the potty early. When one starts using it, it's only a matter of time before the other wants to as well because she would see she gets something when she goes. I know it's easier for girls than boys to get started on the potty.

  • I say buy one.. I didn't have one with my first but now that I remember I want one this time around bc it smells sooooooo bad all the diapers you will have to change in a day! And you having twins will be hard to get out of the house everytime you change 2 diapers at a time to throw them out. Its hard enough with just 1 baby. Thanks for reminding me about getting one!
  • @Mommy2IsaiahNGiselle heehee ok I'll look into it I don't know if babies r us had a diaper champ in the store. I guess I could come up with other uses for it or sell it or use it for a regift even though it will be a gift from me to myself. I do anticipate the difficulty and accidents while transitioning from diapers to potty though. I also am not sure if I need two pottys or one or have the little seat cover on the regular toilet... hmm so many different things to consider when there are TWO babies and not one!
  • I hear they r not very useful but its my first baby and I want to c for myself I'm getting the a&h one

  • @uncaffeinated_katie That's how a lot of my experience with caring for other people's babies were. I just put them in a plastic bag and put them in a nearby trashbin. I guess the diaper champ/genie would minimize waste at the most which is a concern of mine but I never felt good about the idea of cloth diapers.
@Mommy2IsaiahNGiselle I thought about doing both the seat for the regular toilet and a potty when it's time but I didn't want them to fight over either one if they have to go at the same time. I guess I'll have to see when that time comes! UGH, I hate not knowing!
