i have a question for mommies with or who have had winter babies.

edited June 2011 in Parenting
Ok. I am due dec 31 with my 3rd. But my other 2 were born in may and july. I didn't have to worry about rsv or anything with newborn babies. Did any of you have newborns in the winter months and did they ever end up sick or in hospital due to illness from winter? I'm just curious what the chances are of this baby ending up sick more often cuz its due in the middle of winter. Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

  • Lol. Ya I'm so thrilled. I guess I didn't plan this one so well. Lol. I have always thought christmas baby would not be that fun. So we will see. @mshahir
  • Mine was born Dec 31st. I was just anal about hand washing. I didn't keep her cooped up. Wherever I went she did too. She never got sick.

  • I always used a fleece car seat cover so he never breathed the cold air and made sure the car was warm before we left and we went straight to the car and in where we were going and straight to the car again and he never got sick in the winter
  • My son nor jan31st never sick! And I always had him out and about. Just bundle up!
  • My son was born Dec 9 and he wasnt sick..or had to go to the dr at all..just just keep your baby indoors and warm and when go outside have your baby nice a bundle up and always have an extra mittens.beenie.socks.blanket ..everything should been fine :)
  • My first born was born December 2nd ...he had gotten 2 really bad ear infections because of the cold windy weather...i always coverd his head with a beanie had and snuggeled him up tight hes 6yrs old now and still gets ear infections pretty bad in the winter I think his ears are just super sensitive.....but other then that big healthy baby boy... :)
  • My son was born in feb, I go to school and after a week after having him I was back in class. He never got sick until he was about 10 months with roseola. I nursed him and that is one of the best ways to help your baby build antibodies against disease. I don't think keeping them cooped up all the time is the best option. You have to be exposed to things to be able to fight against infection. Just don't go to lots of public places. Going to see family and things like that (as long as they aren't sick) is fine. Make dr apt early as possible in the morning to avoid all the sick kids coming home from school and all that.
  • I had my son in january and he never got sick...I always kept him bundled and washed hands and all the normal stuff..
  • My princess was born dec 8th she had her first cold @3 months frm me over dressing her n her sweating . So try not to over drss whn going out
  • I had my daughter in january during all of our snow storms. I mostly kept her inside but bundled her up really well when she did go out
  • My first two were winter babies (January and March). They didn't get sick at all until they turned about 6 months old. Lol.
  • I had my son in July...not winter but he did get bronchialitis in the winter the first year. So summer babies aren't an exception to getting sick in the winter. I'm due in November so hopefully she won't get sick that young.
  • My first 2 were april and may..this one will be Nov. Plus I haven't had a baby/child in actual cold weather for 8 years-we lived in Florida the past 8.
BUT my youngest step daughter was born in may(in Florida) and when she was about 6/7 months old developed rsv. Had nothing to do with the weather and everything to do with her mother not treating a cold.
We probably wont leave the house really with this one during the winter mostly because there's no one close by to us to visit. His dad and step mom are an hour away so aside from Christmas, I don't see many if any visits. They're not baby/kid people the way his mom is :(
  • My 1st & my 2nd children were born January 8th, 2000, then November 20th, 2002. Since it was flu season they were real strict on visitors in the hospital (only kids allowed would have been my kids/babys sibling; but no friends kids or cousins). My 2nd ended up with RSV right after her 1st birthday, she had antibiotics, nebulizer for breathing treatments, inhalers, antihistamines. She is now an asthmatic, so I would say from personal experience, to be very careful. Babies have very weak immune systems at birth, so if they're born during cold/flu season I highly recommend keeping them away from germs as much as possible to prevent illness.
  • Thanks for asking this! My son was born in June & it wasn't something I had to worry about! This time I'm due Dec 23rd so it'll be different!
  • I got a flu shot a month b4 having my daughter (nov 29)... I also breastfed n she didn't get sick... When I took her out I just made sure she was bundled up
  • My first was born in the beginning of Feb and she got colds and was fine. My friends son was born in Feb and got sick once also. I would just keep baby bundled outside when you go somewhere and make sure the car is heated before you leave ect.
  • Thank you all for your responses. I greatly apreciate them. My best friend has had all hers in wintery months and they never got hospitalized but they got colds. So I've just been wondering. My little nephew was born in oct and ended up with rsv and she took him in at the end of it.
@kamlland1 Rsv is a respritory infection. I can't remember for sure all the technical stuff. But its a bad cold that infants and children get. Premies and newborns are very sensitive to it. And they can get hospitalized if it gets bad enough.
  • I have 2 boys. One is starting school this fall. And I will be having this newborn. Di your newborns ever get a cold from an older sibling in school? And my youngest get strep quite a bit.
I'm sorry. I just worry cuz I've never had a newborn get really sick. The other 2 were around 6 months or older when they were sicker.
  • @angel26 yes they can get sick from older siblings. When my youngest was a newborn and any of the other kids were sick, I wouldn't let them hold or kiss her or go in her room.
  • My daughter was born january 14, 2010. We live in MN so we get some nasty winters. We always made sure she had a blanket on her, a car seat cover over her, and a blanket over that. We made sure the car was always warm when we went somewhere and we were big about hand washing. Her very first sickness was this year in may. Other than that, no ear infections, no colds, no flus, nothing. :)
  • I hate to sound dumb... But what is rsv? Im a ftm!
  • My 1st was a winter baby. We're currently in winter now and i have no idea how i did it lol. She never got sick at all though and i took her out once a week shopping with my mama.
  • my son was born in january, we made sure he was bundled up and plenty of hand washing...he was never sick
