  • I needed to hear that thanks any tips because she has not eaten since 12:30 and she wont suck or wake up@mommy2isaiahmgisell
  • should I jst give her some formula since she hasn't eaten
  • Yeah def keep at it!! That really annoys me that they want you to give up just like that. There meant to be there to guide and help you. It takes time. It took me around 2weeks to get the hang of it and exclusively bf.
  • If you really want to bf i would keep trying but if your not that concerned then give her formula
  • They lactation specialist @ my hospital suggested that I totally undress xavier and do skin to skin if their to warm and comfortable. Babies wont't wake up also suggested i use a wet rag to wipe his face to keep him up so he'll want to feed. He's tongue tied so I had a super hard time @ first but we're doing pretty good now had him on Thursday. Keep @ it u can do it good luck %%-
  • During my daughters first week of life she would pass out every day for about 5 hours and nothing would wake her. My pediatrician told me its not uncommon for newborns to sleep 6-8 hours at first. Don't give up your baby will be fine and you'll soon be missing how much she's sleeping :)

No don't give up. After the first feeding babies are sleepy and drowsy for hours. You have to wake them up yourself, by tickling her or even stripping her down to wake her. Ask to see a lactation consultant to help. Once you get them ob a bottle its hard to get them back on breast. Don't get discouraged.
  • Paraphrased from the womanly art of breastfeeding:
Jiggle her a bit, rub her head, talk to her, stroke her check with your nipple, rub/blow on her feet. Also you can sit your baby on your lap with her chin in your hand andbend her forward at the hip. If she doesn't awaken, try walking your fingers up and down her spine. Gently bring her from a vertical to horizontal position , one hand supporting her head the othe her butt.

I don't have any actual experience, but I thought i'd pass on what I read. Please don't give up!
  • Baby's can go a while without eating after birth. If she is asleep, just let her sleep, she will wake up when she is hungry. I just don't understand why the hospital would want you to formula feed, just because she is asleep. Is she going to wake up to formula? I don't get it. If breastfeeding is something you really want to do, then keep at it. Ask to speak to the lactation consultant for the hospital or find out the number for a local La Leche League Leader and they will come see you in the hospital and help you. Don't let the staff at the hospital bully you or intimidate you into do ing something you don't want to do.
  • Omg, I'm so proud of you women telling her not to give up, there are so many women who just do! Don't give up, try wiping her down with a baby wipe, undressing her, she's not just gonna starve herself. She knows when she is hungry, a babies stomach is sooooo tiny when first born, it litterqlly stretches out in days, not hours. I have sucessfully b.f. two babies till they were almost 1, and plan again with this one. Good luck mama, and remember out bodies were made to do this! :)
  • @mz_hejohnson where are you located? I am at work and can find the number for the La Leche League in your area and post it on here for you.....I am a FTM and I am planning on breastfeeding, but my hospital is certified baby friendly and my sister is a LLL leader, so I have alot of support, I can no imagine how hard it must be for you not having alot of support for you to breast feed! Just let me know if you need the number! :)
  • Mine was in nicu, so when we got to in there the nurse said to change him even when he wasnt dirty, it moves then around and the a cold wipe makes them wake up, then just put same didier back on if not dirty. There is nothing wrong with alittle bit of formula if you feel the baby needs it. The nurse and I tried for over hr. To get him to latch after birth and he was like no thanks, so I did let him have some formula. But told her they were always to let me try the breast first before formula. I don't make much milk so I have to suplement, but always give him me first. keep trying its not as easy as everyone makes it sound, but so worth the hard work. And you can always ask the peditrian what they think you should do.good luck.
  • My daughter didn't eat for 24hrs after she was born. She didn't want to wake up, the nurses said its pretty common. At the 24 hr mark she was up and ready to eat!! Do not give up you can do it!!
  • Thank you everyone I im not giving up the tips are working I'm pumping and bf her still trying to get the hang of it
