? for those that have been through labor and delivery....

It might sound like a dumb question, but I was thinking when it comes to push baby out, what do you push in your body, I mean do you push like you normally go to do #2 or what? And when you do push are they long pushes, how many pushes did it take for you to deliver, I imagine several..

  • I wana know the same thing :/ sorry ima ftm I don't have an answer for you.
  • I pushed for an hour and a half. It was the hardest thing I've ever done! I averaged about 3 pushes per contraction, and they were less than a minute apart, so that's a lot of pushes lol. You push similar to when you go #2, but like ten times harder lol.

Lol its not a dumb question I wondered the same thing with my 1st!

Its kinda like going #2 lol but your layin on your back & the want to push is pretty much uncontrolable! For my pushes I was told when to push & how long to hold them for. I think it was 10sec each push, some were longer but I remember them trying to get me to hold them as long as I could! Lol every woman pushes a different number of times, I pushed for 25min. Which is pretty quick I think lol
  • I pushed for 40mins & did 3 pushes for 10secs & wld take a break til I felt day I gotta push feeling almost lii ke yu have to do #2 yu'll body will let yu know yu gotta push, best thing yu can do is keep calm and whatever yu do, do not scream all dat does is make da baby go right back up
  • @starrxoxo9 and @pnsw524 did you attend birth classes at all before baby got here? And would you recommend that us ftm get those classes?

@MommyLovesSparkle...yes I know that as ftm there are various questions wondering in our minds..... :)
  • My husband and I did the labor class and the newborn care class together. I also did the breast feeding and epidural class!

I think they were helpful, espicially since neither of us really knew what to expect!
  • @1stTime_Mommy thanks for the no screaming advice, will definitely keep that in mind....I was planning on taking it out and screaming at my hubby for having to go thru alll the pain. Haha! ;) LOL!
  • I took a class that covered everything. Id recommend it! With my first daughter almost 2 yrs ago I barley pushed once and she was out, my second daughter 3 weeks ago I seriously didn't push once! Just remember everyone is different! Good luck!
  • I didn't take any classes, but I wish I would have, just for breathing techniques. Your normal reaction is to breathe really fast and I kept feeling like I was gonna pass out, so they had to give me oxygen. You definitely gotta breathe slow and deep.
  • the docs and nurses often tell you to push as if you are having a bowel movement. although i push with my abs. i basically think of it as an intense ab workout to be honest. you push and hold for a count of 10, deep breath in and out then in and hold/push for another count of 10- until the contraction is over. usually only 2-3 counts of 10.
  • Doc had me do 3 pushes per contraction @ 10 sec each they push up on my legs and I push down three sets of three and little dude was out lasted less the 20 min.nurses had to tell me when to push though cause he was breech and they thought doc was gonna do a c section so they up my epidural and a couldn't feel any of my contractions
  • I bought a child birthing dvd (laughandlearn.com) but as far as a class I didn't go that route but the video helped a lot. The nurses thought I had taken a class :)

and as far as labor and pushing with my first I pushed for 50 minutes and they tell you to push as if your having a bm, and with my second 3 pushes and he was out :)
  • you can watch part of that video 'Anatomy and Preliminary Signs of Labor for free :) at the site above, just thought i'd let y'all know :)
  • The best advice I can think of for pushing (& I've had 8 vaginal births - 5 natural, 3 with epi) is to push as looooonnnngggg as you can. Hard is good, but long is most important. And not so hard that ur eyes are bulging out of ur head! Lol. Also, tuck ur chin down to ur chest & that will help you push in the right direction. Screaming, like someone said isn't good, however a natural moan or groan type sound helps sometimes. Also, concentrate on relaxing ur bottom & pelvic floor instead of squeezing ur butt tight. This will help it open up. Some women are worried about pooping & squeeze their butts...lol! Anyway, hope this helps!
  • Haha dis was my first and da best thing I think I did was keep calm! Everyone was so surprised I am usually very dramatic and loud lol but I didn't want her to freak out I wanted to keep it as cool and stress free as possible, its all about remembering its all worth it in da end & da pain is only temporary b4 yu have yur beautiful baby! :) Dat is def what got me thru I had back labor so no type of epidural helped!
