Travelling with a baby under 3 months??

edited September 2011 in Babies
So my baby is due October 19. My bf's family expects us to travel by plane at christmas to go see them. Is it just me or are they on fucking crack to want me a first time mom to travel in the worst weather possible just so they can see their grandchild?

  • They should travel to you!! Tney are nuts!
  • Ah idk.. but I understand why you are nervous... me and my bd moved in my 8th month of pregnancy. I'm currently staying with my mom so that I can stay close to my doctor since I am now 38w 4d pregnant.. and being induced Thursday. Well my point is .. I have to take my newborn on a 2hour drive to the new house :( .... idk what to do.. how long to wait...agh :'(
  • call me crazy but when my son was 4 weeks old i drove us to eugene oregon from reno nevada it was 12 hour drive there, i stayed one night in eugene and it took 2 days to get back because i absolutely had to stop at motel 6 and get some sleep or we wouldn't make it home, plus we stopped in sacramento for a couple hours before going home
  • I have traveled by plane with a newborn. Best thing to do is keep baby sucking on something..paci, bottle, breast ect. It helps with the air pressure. It's not too difficult,, newborns generally sleep :)
  • @jay_brad that is so crazy- im in the process of moving across to a new province Tuesday. Ill be 34 weeks this week. My bf has no job, hasn't worked or looked the entire time i've been pregnant. His parents just find ways to get more money from me. And they couldn't even be bothered to attend my baby shower. Never mind im the only one paying for our move. They STILL haven't stepped up to plate to help their jobless broke user son move. This world would be better off without him and his relatives. Due to their nature im forced to change province before baby is born so that I dont get trapted in alberta. So excuse me if I dont feel like travelling during a stressful time for their lazy useless asses!! Am I being unreasonable?
@adriens_mommy wow you are a brave one! When was he born? I have to travel through wind-y hilly roads and travel an hour to the airport in the next town in the middle of winter. And in that part of bc the snow can reach 6 foot high. Then ill have to fly and transfer in vancouver, hope there are no delays and then make it to calgary where we travel another hour to see his family. All of whom could care less if they lose your animals and trash your house while your on vacation
  • yeah my son slept like 97% of the driving only once on the way home hr started crying cuz a gas pain Oh an he cried to eat and d just pull over n feed him
  • @Proudmommy8789 thank you! I agree.
@bahamamoma4828 great tips. If im stuck going ill have to keep that in mind

Im sorry but make them come to you.. if your the only one working and going to be off work for up to 6 weeks your going to need to save the money. Make them come to you. I wouldn't do it hun. We drove from Ohio to. Outer banks nc with my 3 month old. It wasn't bad really at all bc he slept most of the time. Being that small there still sleeping a lot. We stopped every 2 to 4 hours changed diapers fed him if he was awake (nursed him and I never woke my kids to eat). But again you'd be nuts if you went. Not bc of the flying bc they seem like they are worthless a$$es. Save your money for your baby. Believe me you'll need it! Sorry just my opinion but I think you shouldn't go.
  • he was born may 6 and we went on the trip june 9-12 lol but it it was bad weather i wouldn't have driven in it. it just takes a lot of planning a lot of double triple quadrupl checking the bags make sure u remember everthng. but f its something u dont want to do n the first place then u shouldn't go. they sound like assholes. and if u dont want to be therr then it will be that much more stressful with a baby. i thought i wanted.to go visit fam in eugne i was supposed o stay a couple days but i literally packed back up and drove back the morning after i got there because my family sucks and F them
  • @momofSOONtobe7 yea it sounds like it wouldn't be TERRIBLE if I travelled but thank you. I feel very justified in my reasons for not wanting to travel. How many vacation's do we need to take in one year? This is way to much travelling for me and for them? HA! As if im going to go that extra bit for them.
@adriensmommy well it isn't mission impossible to travel as you've shown, sorry your family didnt make the effort you gave to see them worth your time. I'd be furious if I did that travel just to pack up! Oh and the cherry on top is I dont have to go if I dont want- I did a double take when he said that. I plan to be breast feeding full time until baby is 6 months. You cant take my baby away for a week or two that young!
  • I went out of town with my daughter when she was 3 weeks old. We were in the car for 4 hours each way. It wasn't bad...the worst part was packing and planning to be away for that long. Man, it sucked! But everything else was fine.
  • he suggested that he take your newborn and go while u stay behind??!!??! IS HE HIGH???? i would never ever ever ever never never ever EVER let ANYBODY take my baby farther than the local walmart let alone another state!
  • @BkE913 thanks for your input. We also have 3 cats and have to find someone we trust enough to look after them while we leave. Its a lot of kitty litter maintenance and attention to give.
@adriensmommy lmao yes when he came home to tell me this whole plan he was indeed high. After doing dinner with his dad and one of his brothers. As if I trust my baby in this messy dirty house with someone who "doesn't have time" to be there for her son and pregnant gf. They're dirty dog is loud and obnoxious. No..NOT happening at all until baby is older and has a better immune system
  • Yeah I agree with @adriens_mommy. I wouldn't let my man take my baby away from me at all. If I left they left with me. If they left I left with them. I nursed all 4 of mine strictly and I wouldn't pump so that was my excuse for not letting them take them any where. Sorry im the babies source of food so where the baby goes I go. Still id make them come unless they are paying for your tickets. You I don't think have to pay for the baby. Not 100% sure of that but still that's a lot of money. Good luck hun. Stand your ground I would for sure! Don't let someone force you into something you don't want to do.
  • Oh yeah, you certainly cannot leave kitties abandoned and alone, especially their litter box. Yuck! Yeah, your family should be understanding that you're not thrilled about the idea of traveling in the middle of winter with a newborn. I would tell them they're high in the night if they expect you to. No way, Jose! [-(
  • I don't think you're being unreasonable. Mother's are NEVER unreasonable when they are putting the baby first in my eyes!
  • I live in texas and my baby is september in the 28th and I plan on taking a plane trip to illinois at the end of november so my granny and great granny can see the baby because they both have alzheimers
  • Our baby could come any day now, but trying to hold out until the end of the month. We are flying to Orlando at the beginning of November. I have already discussed with our pediatrician. :)
  • I traveled with my newborn when she was 11 weeks old we flew to Chile and it was a 14hr flight!!! the good thing is that the airline had a row with a bassinet where she was ale to lay in once the seatbelt sign was off
