Questions about the drug used to stop contractions

edited September 2011 in Third Trimester
Last night I went to the hospital because I was having contractions. I am exactly 39 weeks but scheduled to have a repeat csection on Tuesday morning. Anyways, I was there for about 3 hours and having regular contractions, but not dilating. So the nurse came in and gave me an injection of terabutline or however you spell it. I had the absolute worst reaction! I started trembling, had the chills and was having bad heart palpitations. I complained to the nurse and she said I was having an anxiety attack!!! Ugh, I've never had one in my life!!!! I was sent home because it helped to stop the contractions. I came home and googled the drug and saw I had a textbook adverse reaction to it. I also read that its very controversal and can cause autism. I'm so scarded now because my husband has 2 little brothers that are autistic. I'm also pissed that the nurse didn't disclose the risks of the drug before giving it to me. I have been so careful about not exposing my unborn daughter to anything and now this has happened. Anyone have any further info or know if it can have any effects on her so late in the pregnancy?

  • That's what I'm thinking! You're 39 wks & they stop contractions?? Something funnys going on. If any thing happens like autism or whatnot, sue these idiots!!! & save any papers saying they gave you this drug. Rmember you can refuse meds.
  • Dude, why the heck did they try to stop them? Did they tell you?!? Why wouldn't they just let you go ahead and do a section last night or wait until you started dilating and then section you?? Some doctors are idiots lol
  • All the nurse said was my contractions were due to dehydration and that the medicine would calm them down. I had no idea!!! I feel so naive and stupid for putting my baby through this! I'm sure the only reason they did was out of sheer laziness! They probably didn't want do to a section in the middle of the night on a Saturday night. Ugh!!! I'm gonna file a complaint tomorrow at the hospital. But now I'm questioning the doctor I have because if she authorized this how can I trust her to do a csection on me??? I hope since I was only given one dose it won't effect her. I totally believe it was uncalled for and almost grounds for malpractice since I wasn't properly informed of the possible side effects prior to being given it. I've learned a major lesson though. I will never be given anything for any reason unless I am fully informed of the worst case scenario first.
  • I'll bump my terb post
