went and saw a lactation consultant ....

I was at WIC today, and I went to see their LC. She asked me what my problems have been with bf. Told her my story....baby would latch, eat for 15-30 sec then unlatch, get frustrated and it would keep repeating. She just wasn't that interested in bf. So I started using breast flow bottles, pumping, and supplementing what I couldn't pump with formula. Then the LC basically told me the baby probably won't breast feed now, since she's been on bottles for two weeks. She didn't even tell me to try and breast feed or to bring my baby in to try and help me get her to breast feed. She only talked to me for 3 minutes and sent me on my way....I've heard everyone say how amazing LC's are with helping babies bf and how they really know what they're doing. I'm sure most are amazing. But that wasn't the case with me. I'm really disappointed in the appointment...I thought she was going to help me or give me some tips....but no. So now I'm just going to try and increase my supply with the fenugreek pills and mothers milk tea. I'm just really defeated with breast feeding...and this is never how I wanted it to be.

  • I would be disappointed too :( Dont give up though, keep trying to breastfeed even if it doesnt quite work. I'm hoping everything turns out for the best
  • im sorry they werent helpful. my daughter did the same thing in the beginning and i was also pumping and using bottles. but for some reason she stopped and now im strictly breastfeeding. i would keep trying and maybe shell get the hang of it. do you think maybe your letdown is to fast for her??
  • I talk to the LC at the hospital. I'm sure they are waaaaaaaay better.
  • Don't give up! That's so not true, baby can be taught. I even had a preemie and it took us 3-4 months and we went for 18 months.
  • i would never tell my client that as an LC...ill get on my comp in a bit and inbox u some stuff

@valentinasmommy my hospital is an Army hospital and they don't have lc's....

@bahamamama4828 I just don't know what to do...I have a book that tells me how latch and positions and I do them but it still doesn't work. I don't know if I'm doing it right. I don't know how to get her to stay on and eat and not un latch. Yeah, I was surprised that she didn't really try and help me. Okay, great. I'll take any info I can get! I wish you were in my area!

@jazzi89 I wish my daughter would do that! :( What is the let down?
  • Have you googled to see if there is a La Leche League in your area? They are a support group for breastfeeding mothers and should have a lot of advice and help for you. You might also see if you can get an appt with your ped. Have they checked to see if she's tongue tied? Sometimes the piece of skin that connects her tongue to the bottom of her mouth can be too long and it makes breastfeeding incredibly difficult. Good luck!
  • I saw two different counselors one at wic one at my hospital so I just pump now because neither help and supplement with formula...it sucks I regret ever giving him a bottle
  • I bottle fed my son for 3 weeks and just started giving him the boob the other day. He gets frustrated at first but then will feed from me
  • let down is when your milk drops. it usually happens when your about to feed. my let down for instance is extremely fast and my daughter gets frustrated and unlatches and screams and chokes. i usually have hand express a little before she latches on unless she latches before it starts.

@laura536 I've looked it up and I called, no one answered, I left a message but no one has called me back. Hmm, she just went to the doctors yesterday, didn't check for being tongue tied. Does it look different then a normal tongue? Cause the nurse looked in her mouth and didn't say that she was.

@preggointx My hospital gave her a bottle without asking me :( I wanted skin to skin and be able to breast feed her from the beginning, but she had to go to the nicu. So they just bottle fed her, and then my husband told me after he came back from seeing her.

@snreda does your son latch, eat a little, and then unlatch?

@jazzi89 I'm not sure if its too fast for her...she doesn't choke. Sometimes I think she's not getting enough or not getting it fast enough and then she just gets upset.
  • Google images for "tongue tied" and you can see, it looks basically the same, but she can't lift her tongue up as far as she could if that skin was shorter. If it isn't very severe, the nurse might not have even noticed, but she would have trouble making the sucking motion to get milk from your breast, which would cause her to try and eat a bit and then get frustrated and stop. Your ped can snip it though to help her. I think they are just looking for spots, like thrush, when they check her mouth, she would have had to lift the baby's tongue to see it.
  • He does at first, but I squeeze my boob and like manipulate my nipple in his mouth, then he will stay on for a while. Then when he starts getting fussy with it I squeeze my boob again in his mouth. They make shields for you're boob to make it feel like a bottle, maybe get those?
  • @laura536 Oh, hmm I'll have to look the pictures up and look at her tongue...will it have the same affect with bottle feeding or only breast feeding?

@snreda I did buy a nipple shield but it didn't work, my nipple wouldn't go all the way up in the shield, so when she'd suck she wouldn't get anything. I guess I just have to small of a nipple for the shield....or I'm not using it right.
  • hmm im not sure thn. i know with my lil one it was too fast and she does have a bit of a tongue tie which makes it difficult for her sometimes. mayb ask ur pedi nxt visit. mine helped alot with bf questions
  • They don't have to work as hard to get milk from a bottle, so she may be working harder at the bottle, but still not as hard as she would to get it from the breast.
  • Have you tried the breast flow bottles? They work just like a boob. And maybe you got the wrong size shield?
  • @snreda I actually only use breast flow bottles. Maybe I did get the wrong size...ill have to go to the store again this weekend and look at all the sizes.
  • They come in small med and lg, I got avent med. I need small. My husband and I are dumb and went by boob size, not actual nipple nub size. I may get the madela one though it seems thinner.
  • @snreda hmm...I wonder if the avent ones would work better for me. I have the medela small...but it doesn't seem that small to me.
  • @august22baby so he latches eats a little and then unlatches...but then he gets it a few tries later?
  • Oh lemme tell u about the fenugreek as it helps with my flow. If u don't have any new weird smell coming from ur skin then ur not taking enough of it. I read that on a bf site after noticing my skin smells like maple syrup lol esp my armpits and hands even after I shower. So if u don't have any smell on ur skin then ur not taking enough. And it works best the 1st week so PUMP PUMP PUMP AND GET BABY LATCHED ON IF U CAN!
  • I'm sorry that LC wasn't any help. The LC at my hospital was very helpful came back a 2nd time actually and was grabbing my freaking nipple telling me how to sandwich it n all for the baby to latch properly! Lmbo #can we say uncomfortable! ! Lol but she was helpful!
  • Where in Georgia are you? If your near Albany, there is a wonderful lactation specialist.

Try squeezing your breast like a cow until you see some milk at your nipple. Then place her kind of between a 45 and 90 degree angle. Help her latch on to your nipple. If she gets off, redirect her back on. Make sure her nostrils are still open to air or she can't breath and will delatch. If your flow is too fast, you just have to push under her nose by your areola to slow it.

Keep putting her to breast. It's frustrAting but if you want it, sit there with her for 30 minutes and keep trying.

About the shield, the medela is the best. It's the most natural. Your nipple won't go all the way too the top. Get your milk on your -nipple then invert the shield and put it on. It really does help.

And last, there's nothing wrong with supplementing if you need to. But whatever breast milk you can give her, even mixed with formula, for as long as you can is best for her.
  • @kingsmama I just bought fenugreek pills today. So I'm hoping they work well!
  • They work great for me! I can pump 3-5oz after my son feeds from me. I don't have any extra milk stored tho cuz he's an eating machine lol.
  • @kingsmama oh wow, that's good! I'm hoping to get 3-5oz each time I pump after the pills start to work...or maybe more since my baby doesn't eat from the breast. I'm HOPING the pills will work great, so that I can pump enough to where she only eats breast milk....I won't mind if its from a bottle...as long as she gets it!
