Pumping question.

edited September 2011 in Pregnant
I have been pumping milk for a few days now and not breastfeeding at all due to torn nipples. Is this bad? I feel so guilty and scared that I will cause problems.

  • Pumping is fine just a pain in the butt! Although your body might get use to pumping as it cannot empty breasts ad efficiently as the baby can. Some moms are known to get decreased supply :)
  • No the only issue is possibly having baby not want the breast anymore and will only take bottled milk. My son is weird and can go back and forth with no problem at all lol.
  • I have tried breastfeeding again today and she will take it but doesnt seem to have very much she doesnt cry for more and has done nothing but sleep. Should I be worried that she isnt getting enough? Also she seems to choke a little on my boob but doesnt do this with a bottle. Its really worrying me.

  • As long as you are keeping up and have a good supply going you should be ok. It is possible that your baby will get used to bottles and might not latch properly when you switch back. But don't fret not all babies have issues.

  • The choking could be from an overactive letdown. Pump a tiny bit before nursing and see if that helps
  • I would try to get your baby back on breast as soon as your girls can tolerate it. (Because of what bahamamama4828 and kingsmama said). If baby only wants the bottle by then, a nipple shield can ease the transition.
  • Thanks heaps :) I think im just going to tough it up and stop pumping I really want whats best for my little girl even if it is hard.
  • A nipple shield will also make bfing w/ sore nipples easier and distribute the milk slower (if over-active let-down is an issue). Both my kids choked a bit during the first few weeks...its normal, bfing is a learning process for mom and baby!
